Released on April 15 2011, Derek's most recent album, Strangers, Vol. 2 , takes a darker approach than his previous work, akin to a tenor Tom Waits or a more accessible Captain Beefheart. Lyrical inspiration comes from French writers - look out.
Strangers, Vol. 1 , explores a wide breadth of lyrical themes within the folk medium. The album has received positive press , drawing comparisons to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Bon Iver.
After listening to John Fahey religiously for years, songwriter Derek Porter decided to record an instrumental folk guitar album in the same vein. While developing the songs, a narrative began to evolve around them. It was a story about a traveler coming upon a mysterious friend who helps him continue on his way while coming across incredible landscapes and vistas on their journey. The music was the driving force behind their action. It is very much about being on the road, always heading toward something even if they don't know what that is exactly.
Artist and illustrator Julia Tiller took Heaven's Hill into the visual world by crafting delightful characters and environments in her signature style. She took Derek's basic ideas and turned them into something much more evocative and emotionally resonant. Her interpretation is featured in the video that is included when you download Heaven's Hill.
