Peace Committes in Kenya are community representative institutions that facilitate peace forums at the various administrative levels i.e. the Provincial Peace Forum (PPF), District Peace Committees (DPC), Divisional Peace Committee (DvPC), Location and Village Peace Committees. They are largely hybrid structures, borrowing heavily from traditional conflict resolution mechanisms and the modern formal dispute resolution process.
Peace Committees is proud of all the DPCs, CSOs and community groups which actively participated in ensuring Kenya had a peaceful referendum on 4th of August 2010.

The advent of Peace Committee in Kenya can be traced back the early 1990s, when local level peacebuilding initiatives began in Wajir. This culminated in the establishment of the Wajir Peace and Development Committee (WPDC) in 1995.
The peace committee model has come a long way and is now embraced by non-pastoralists communities facing different levels of communal tensions (negative), violence and conflict within themselves. After the post-election violence (PEV) in 2008 witnessed, the replication of the DPC model has occured in non arid areas of Central, Coast, Western, Nyanza and the Rift Valley Provinces. This was also in line with the recommendations of Agenda Item 21 of the Kenya National dialogue and Reconciliation process led by former UN Secretary General - Dr. Koffi Annan - between January and February 2008, which called for the formation of DPCs countrywide.
The government of Kenya through the National Steering Committee on Peace Building and Conflict Management (NSC) and local administrators has hence established DPCs in a majority of the districts with a view to steer the process of reconciliation among polarized communities (NSC, 2009)
A number of peace committees have been taken through peace building trainings organized by government and civil society organizations alike. They have been organized around the theme of peace building and conflict resolution in the community so as to create an understanding of the following aspects; conflict and conflict analysis process, responses to community conflict, peace building advocacy.
In order to restore peace and co-existence amongst communities affected by conflict, community dialogue forums have been organized by the peace committees in conjunction with government and CSOs in their locality.
