ABOUT
BIO
Czech mezzo-soprano Pavlína Horáková most recently performed the title role in opera Carmen with Opera Amore, two solo concerts in New York City, and appeared as Eurynome at Manhattan School of Music’s production of Penelope by G. Faure. She performed a lead role of Old Maid and Zdrapana Terka in the Czech minimalistic opera, Soudnicky at the Prague Conservatory Opera Studio. She frequently sang as a soloist with the Mladi choir, Musica Oeconomica Pragensis and the orchestra of the University of Economics in Germany, Belgium and Slovakia. She sang at the European project EMSO 2003 with an international orchestra under the direction of Australian conductor Dr. David Banney. She won the Czech National Vocal Competition and appeared on a Czech televised Competition, “Caruso Show”. In addition to a classical repertoire Pavlína sang with the Czech rock band Checkpoint and appeared on a CD release Ruzný světy. She performed as a teaching artist in the outreach program at Manhattan School of Music, and wrote and performed her solo one woman show Why do I love Opera? for a wide range of public school students in New York City.
She holds a Master Degree from Manhattan School of Music, having studied classical voice with Arthur Levy. Other teachers and coaches include Dona D. Vaughn, Mignon Dunn, Marianne Barrett, Scott Rednour, Cristina Stanescu or Ann Lewin. In addition she holds a Master of Business Administration from Prague University of Economics and she also graduated from the Prague Conservatory.
This year she created and successfully launched a new project: “Voice New York” in Prague. From her experience as a voice student in the Czech Republic, she is aware of the limited opportunities for talented young Czechs to receive voice training on a high level at a reasonable cost, and decided to initiate a program to address this need. In addition to the design of the program, Pavlina was responsible for organization, administration, institutional relations, fund-raising, and promotion and was able to secure Manhattan School of Music Opera Program Director Dona D. Vaughn to teach as the primary faculty member. The program was funded in part by a grant from the U.S. State Department, and supported by the Prague Academy of Performing Arts and the non profit organization, Hlasove Centrum. It proved to be a great success artistically and pedagogically, as well as an enormously valuable learning experience for herself.
Pavlina’s goal is to connect her two fields of study. While her dream is to become a professional opera singer, she also would like to incorporate her business savvy in a way that gives back to the profession she loves. By fostering social responsibility through the visible practice of managing her own non-profit, she hopes to encourage musical talents of youth. Through this organization undiscovered and disadvantaged talent would be given recourses and skills to develop their own music.
