NEW ZEALAND - AOTEAROA
Tucked away down in the right-hand corner of most standard world maps is what looks to be a tiny, insignificant scrap of land split into 3 main islands. It is in fact a minute fragment of the great ancient southern continent of Gondwana (Gondwanaland for short ) - a fragment that has floated in isolation for about 120 million years since the day when Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea finally united forever and cut it adrift. (Do I hear the Aussies cheering?)
Isolation is only one factor in the story of New Zealand - which has hosted an amazing variety of plants and animals, many of them unique. This small land mass straddles the south-western edge of the Pacific Plate, right on the "Ring of Fire" - a situation it shares with California, Japan, Indonesia and the west coast of South America. It was the location of probably the biggest volcanic eruption this planet has ever known,
and even today its volcanoes are anything but quiet.
This website is dedicated to the art of a New Zealander who is passionate about the country, its geology, its widlife and its history. Much research and love has gone into these artworks.
Please enjoy.
