Hillel
Bates College
ABOUT
The Bates Hillel is run entirely by students and is open to the entire Bates community.
Hillel provides Friday night Shabbat services and dinner, which are held in the Frye Street Union. Every year, we bring in a Rabbinical student or a Rabbi to lead High Holiday services. We also traditionally lead religious events for Sukkot, Hanukkah, Tu BiShvat, Purim, Passover, and Yom Hashanah.
Hillel also sponsors speakers about Judaism as a religion and a culture in efforts to inform the campus at large about important issues. Numerous other events which are more cultural are held each year, such as apple picking, movie showings, and comedians. Hillel works with chaplain Bill Blaine-Wallace and local Rabbi Hillel Katzir to provide educational materials available for general campus use.
Maine Jewry
If you are concerned that going to school in Maine will deprive you of a good Jewish experience, don't worry. Maine has over 10 synagogues with Rabbi's who help us out in activities and in worship. With events like the Maine Jewish Film Festival and the scenery like the beautiful beaches and mountains, we feel that Maine is a wonderful place to practice Judaism.
PROSPECTIVE
STUDENTS
Jewish life on the Bates campus consists of a closely knit group of dedicated students who work diligently to provide the best experience for Jewish students that we can. The Hillel is one of the most active groups on campus providing a comfortable forum to meet other Jewish students, practice religion, and partake in cultural activities. Over the year, the Hillel organizes and co-sponsors about 60 events and activities open to the entire student body.
