About Us
My name is Madeline and I am a Junior Girl Scout. I am working on my Bronze Award, the highest award a girl can earn as a Junior. For my project, I have started an organization called the Imagination Association. I love to read, and I want to share that love with other kids. My organization's slogan is "Helping a child's imgination run free, one book at a time".
My project has three parts:
Build-A-Book Workshop
A fun craft workshop for adults and children with IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) I organized as part of MHRA's Destination Dignity Event.
Book Drive
A book drive for two new reading spaces at Foster Elementary and MHMRA's Child and Adolescent Center.
Ready, Set, Write!
A compilation of stories by kids and for kids. This book will help other kids discover their own imagination.
Build-a-Book
The Build-a-Book event took place at MHMRA's Destination Dignity Fair.
This fair is held every year for persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), their families and the public .
"Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are stigmatized daily in many ways, such as in employment opportunities, housing options, the education system, and in social settings. No member of society desires stigmatization, whether by race, religion or disability. Destination Dignity embodies the philosophy that greater awareness facilitates education, which ultimately combats the effects of stigma, such as discrimination, bigotry, and hate."
With help from other Girl Scout volunteers, the Imagination Association helped more than
150 fair attendees make their very own
books to take home.

We are holding a book drive to collect books for new reading rooms at Foster Elementary and MHMRA(follow the link to Gifts with Hearts website where there is more information and a video interview about the reading room). Gifts with Heart and Houston Community College are building the reading rooms but I need your help to fill it with books. This reading room will be a safe place for parents to read with their children and for community mentors to work with students.
The drive is taking place from November 12, to December 10, 2009.
My goal is to collect 1,000 books for the library. The book levels should range from Pre-K to 5th grade.
Please contact me to arrange pick up for book donations.
Books may be new or gently used.

Ready, Set, Write
The last part of my project is to make a book of stories written by kids.
I love to read and write and part of the reason I began this project is to share this love with other children just like me. It's sad but some kids never see a book outside of school.
I want to collect stories written by kids that love to read. I will compile these stories into a book to donate to the Foster Elementary Reading Room. I hope that reading these stories will inspire other kids to use their imaginations.
The stories can be hand-written or typed and anyone from Pre-K to 5th Grade can write them. These stories should be appropriate for elementary age children. Also, if you have any ideas about the title of the book, we'd be glad to hear them.
Please contact me about story donations. I will be glad to pick them up or if you type them on a computer you can email them to Swift-Design_comcast.net
