Welcome to Hilary term with the Oxford Asia-Pacific Society (OUAPS). CONSTITUTION

The Oxford Asia-Pacific Society (OUAPS), formed in 1999, aims to promote an understanding of and inspired interest in social, economic and political issues relating to the Asian-Pacific region, amongst the students of Oxford University. APS represents the largest Asian society in Oxford with over 700 members: its affiliates and networks span across four continents and thousands of interested parties. The society envisages to present an all-encompassing society focused on the Asia-Pacific in an international context and a global outlook.
Intellectual stimulation is our key motivation and we are dedicated to presenting a number of insightful academic, career and cultural events for every term We have had the privilege of hosting a diverse range of renowned guest speakers whose work relates to the Asian-Pacific region, including: Mr Jackie Chan, honourary member of APS; Lord Patten, ex-Governor of Hong Kong; Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR; Mr. Anwar Ibahim, former deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia;and Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda, President of the Asian Development Bank.We are also particularly active in organizing careers events such as: the Oxford Investment & Banking Conference featuring senior executives from leading investment banks and alternative investment management firms, an annual career trip to Hong Kong visiting the regional headquarters of Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan and an annual Focus on Asia event organized by Deutsche Bank.As the APS steps into its twelfth anniversary, it does so in confidence and with a concrete belief in its purpose and direction. The society shall continue actively pursuing its aims whilst continuing to host its flagship large-scale social and cultural events each term as its climax to enable students to engage with Asian cultures in Oxford
•Article I - NAME•Article II - OBJECTIVES•Article III - MEMBERSHIP•Article IV - THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE•Article V - GENERAL MEETINGS•Article VI - CHANGES TO THE CONSTITUTION•Article VII - DISSOLUTIONArticle I - NAME:Section 1. The name of the Society shall be the Oxford Asia Pacific Society and for future reference it can also be referred to as 'APS' and in this constitution hereafter also referred to as 'The Society'.Article II - OBJECTIVES:Section 1. The Society aims to promote an interest and understanding in political, economic, social and cultural developments in Asia and the Pacific regions of the world.Article III - MEMBERSHIP:Section 1. Membership of the Society shall be open to all matriculated members of the University.Section 2. The Society may offer Membership on such terms as it may decide.Section 3. The Executive Committee may expel any member whose conduct seems likely to bring the Society into disrepute. Such expulsion shall be subject to confirmation at the next General Meeting of the Society.Article IV - THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:Section 1. The day-to-day management of the Society's affairs shall be in the hands of the Executive Committee and Ordinary Committee.Section 2. The Executive Committee shall consist of a President, Vice-President (President-Elect), Chief Secretary and Financial Secretary to be elected at a General Meeting, and other such Executive officers to be determined by the President. The maximum term of office for Executive officers may not exceed two terms.Section 3. Meetings of the Executive Committee shall be chaired by the President. If the President is absent, the remaining members shall elect a Chairperson for that meeting. The quorum for a meeting of the Executive Committee shall be three members and a written record of each meeting shall be kept.Article V - GENERAL MEETINGS:Section 1. General Meetings shall be held once each term. At least seven days written notice shall be given to members before a General Meeting.Section 2. A General Meeting shall conduct a report of the previous term¡¯s business and conduct such other business as may be necessary.Section 3. An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) may be held at any time. It shall be held in Oxford and may be called by the Executive Committee or at the written request of at least ten members. Seven days written notice shall be given to members before an EGM is held. An EGM shall have the same powers as an AGM.Section 4. The President shall take the Chair at any General Meeting. In the absence of the President the meeting shall elect a Chairperson for that meeting. The quorum for a General Meeting shall be five members and a written record of every General Meeting shall be kept.Article VI - CHANGES TO THE CONSTITUTION:Section 1. The Constitution may be amended at a General Meeting.Article VII - DISSOLUTION:Section 1. Any ordinary member may move for the Society to be dissolved provided he is seconded by at least three other ordinary members.Section 2. A written motion shall be submitted to the Executive Committee.Section 3. The Executive Committee shall be under a duty to hold an extraordinary general meeting to determine the issue.Section 4. The general meeting shall be held no less than seven days and no more than twenty-one days after the motion is received by the Executive Committee.Section 5. There shall be a quorum of one-half of the ordinary members.Section 6. No resolution shall be passed to dissolve the society unless two-thirds of the ordinary members present in a general meeting vote in favour to dissolve the society

Lord Alton is a former Liberal Party and later Liberal Demo- crat Member of Parliament (MP) who now sits as cross bench member of the House of Lords. He stablished the successful lobby group for human rights, Jubilee Campaign, in 1987, with the support of numerous members of parlia- ment. Since then, he has also co-founded Jubilee Action, a childrens charity established to fulfil the humanitarian needs highlighted by the work of Jubilee Campaign. Lord Alton is also the chairman of the British-DPRK All-Party Parliamen- tary Group, and visited Pyongyang in October 2010 when

he had talks with leaders of the North Korean government including Choe Thae Bok, chairman of the Supreme Peoples Assembly, the countrys rubber-stamp parliament. He is visit- ing North Korea again this October, and he will be address- ing our members after this trip.

Peggy Liu, Chairperson and co-founder of JUCCCE, is an internationally recognized expert on Chinas energy landscape.

She was honored as a Time Magazine Hero of the Environ- ment in 2008, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2009, the Hillary Laureate of 2010 for climate change lead- ership, a Forbes Women to Watch in Asia in 2010, and an energy adviser to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2008 and a member of the World Economic Forums Global Agenda Council on New Energy Architecture 2011. We host this event with the Oxford University Malaysian and Singaporean Student Association. It has been the largest Asian food event at Oxford, and normally more than 10 societies participate.

We host the Annual Oxbridge Boat Party with Cambridge ABACUS (Association of British and Chinese University Students) on the London Thames at the end of November.
