No simple answer. Almost everybody has a different idea, but all of the ones I consider correct, revolve around the following common themes:
1.- Cost control.
2.- Inclussion of different processes such as procurement, sourcing, supply chain, spend analysis, contract management, invoicing and outsourcing.
3.- Resource optimization.
4.- Risk Management
So, the spend management professional is an expert in controlling costs by ways of optimizing how, when, how much and where the purchased goods and services are delivered to the enterprise from the right vendor, at the right price with the minimum of risk.
Carlos is a procurement professional who specializes in helping organizations realize the promise of cost savings by utilizing advanced management skills in Strategic Sourcing. This process shortens best-practices adoption timelines, and also provides the ability to tackle some of the most difficult problems affecting a company, such as managing complex procuremet organizations, inventory overflow, rogue purchasing, unrealized savings, sustainability and lack of spend visibility.
Since early 2011 he has been working as a Consulting Manager at BravoSolution , a leading supplier of software and services for the enterprise sourcing professional. In that role Carlos is in charge of implementing the solution, support change management processes, identify sourcing opportunities and execute comprehensive sourcing processes to identify savings across a wide array of categories.
He has worked at the forefront of the spend management practice for about eleven years, first at FreeMarkets, Inc. and then Ariba , Inc, both of which merged in 2004. Late in 2009, he started a new role as the third US based employee at an emerging spend management software company, Ivalua, an established software publisher based out of France which was launching new operations in North America.
Carlos worked for 5 years at the FreeMarkets Brazil office managing clients in Latin America and in 2006 he moved to Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area to manage some Ariba clients in the High Tech, Oil&Gas and Utilities sectors. During this second phase Carlos worked in developing and managing multi-million engagements, interacting with C level executives, creating commodity strategies and in general helping corporations save hundreds of millions of dollars by setting new strategic goals and by optimizing sourcing and procurement processes.
During his tenure at the companies listed above, he also led the deployment of end-to-end spend management programs at Fortune 500 client corporations around the globe, in a wide range of industries such as Oil & Gas, Food, Diversified Manufacturing, High Tech, Retail and Mining.
Also, in 2009 as acting Director of Procurement & IT at EcoGreen Group, a non-profit start-up in Silicon Valley, he was focused on developing a sustainable procurement framework for corporations and advocating how innovative software solutions and cloud computing can save money while reducing carbon footprints.
He holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and an MBA, is a Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M), speaks Spanish, Portuguese and English, thrives on OpenSource software and now lives in Santa Clara, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley.
