Home First Day of School
They started school this morning, and they seemed so very small. As I walked there beside them, in the Kindergarten hall.
And as they took their place beside, the others in the class,I realized how all too soon, those first few years can pass.
Remembering, I saw them as they first learned how to walk. The words that we alone made out, when they began to talk.
This little child so much absorbed, in learning how to write. It seems as though they must have grown, into childhood overnight.
My eyes were blurred but hastily,I brushed the tears away.Lest by some word or sign of mine,I mar the first big day.
Oh how I longed to stay with them, and keep them by the hand.To lead through the places, that they couldn't understand.
And something closely kin to fear, was mingled with my pride.I knew that I would no longer have a baby by my side.
But they must have their chance to live, to work their problems out.The privilege to grow and learn, what life is all about.
And I must share my child with friends and work and play; Not a baby anymore --but in Kindergarten today.~author unknown
Sight Words "What are sight words, and what purpose do they serve?"
Sight words are a special group of words that we teach children to recognize instantly by sight, rather than by sounding them out phonetically as we do with most other words. The may also be called high-frequency words or Dolch words. Sight words are the most common used words in most childrens books. Learning sight words can help your child to read quickly and efficiently. They also help aid in comprehension.
Students need constant exposure to these common words through songs, poems, games, flashcards, magnetic letters, copy work, independent practice and books. The more frequently children see the sight works the quicker they will learn them.
In class you will hear sight words being referred to as Rainbow Words. Each list will contain 12 words. Your child will start on the red list. After all the words in the red list have been introduced and practiced in class we will test the children every Friday. If they pass, they will go on to their yellow words and so on until they have mastered all words. You will find their Rainbow Words recording sheet in their homework folder each week, please leave this sheet in the folder. When students master all of their rainbow words they will earn a bag a skittles!
