History of FASA
The Filipino American Student Association of Old Dominion University was founded on April 5, 1991. FASA was established to contribute to the awareness of preservation of Filipino culture and heritage throughout ODU and the community. Due to the large concentration of Filipinos living in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia, FASA serves as one of the venues which aid in the understanding and awareness of social issues that many Filipinos face in today's American society as well as abroad. FASA is an organization that is open to everyone and anyone who is willing to learn and participate.

ODU FASA Membership Form
2009-2010
Kuya/Ate Program
Kuya = older brother
Ate = older sister
Ading = younger one
Each year, new members are paired with older FASA members based on personality and degree emphasis. The Kuya/Ate Program strives to bring FASA members closer together, allowing for the transition of new members to be as seamless as possible.
Participating new members will be assigned one Kuya or Ate, and that person will be there to help the Ading not only integrate into the FASA family, but also readjust into college life and act as a mentor and confidant
Points System
The Point System was developed in August 2009 for two primary reasons: to provide a clean, competitive, and fun environment for the members to experience, and to help keep members active within the organization. These reasons help to uphold one of FASAs constitutional purposes in preserving a cooperative relationship with ODU, the students, and the community.
This is a Family and Individual competition, with an incentive awarded at the discretion of the Executive Board and/or the Point System Coordinator at the end of each semester.
Points can be given to and taken from members at any FASA related meetings, volunteer opportunities, social events, and fundraisers. At any time, the Point System Coordinator can assign mindless, but fun tasks for members to gain more points.
Other ways a member may gain points:
1. Attend FIND, Inc's Dialogue/Conference
2. Attend any District VII held events such as the D7 Olympics
3. Word of the Week
4. Culture Quiz
5. Provide assistance to the Executive Board
Only official FASA members can gain points!
Click here to see the Points spreadsheet.
Definitions:
A family is made up of individual members created by the Kuya/Ate Program. The members work individually and together to gain points. This is to encourage members to build upon and continue their family legacy. Refer to the KAP section for more information.
FIND, Inc (Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue, Incorporated) and District VII are interrelated organizations associated with ODU FASA, but on a national and district level respectively. Refer to the D7 Representative (in the Officer page) for more information.
Word of the Week is a task for individuals to learn a new Tagalog word, and are encouraged to find the Historian on campus and use the word in a sentence whether in English or Tagalog. The Word of the Week is given at the end of all weekly email updates.
The Culture Quiz is a quiz on Filipino culture. Members are given an article to read, which is followed by a quiz based on the article on Philippine culture and history. The quiz is available at the end of all weekly email updates.
Culture Night
The biggest event FASA hosts, Culture Night is usually held near the end of the Spring semester in April. On this night, the Filipino culture is shown off through acting, live music, traditional dances, and personal speeches - all collaborated on and presented by FASA members and open to the public.
Audiences get to experience the social issues prevalent in the Filipino community, while learning about Filipino customs and traditions in a unique way. People from all over the state come each year to watch the show.
Guest performers are sometimes an added bonus to Culture Night. In 2008, Jeremy (Passion) Monongo put on a performance that set the crowd on fire.
Admission to this event is generally free, and all FASA members are expected to participate in one way or another - onstage and/or backstage. Preparations for Culture Night begin months in advance, as new members must be taught the traditional dances and skits must be writtten and rehearsed.
District 7
History in the Making.
District Seven (D7) of the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue, Incorporated (FIND) was founded in 1993 by a group of Virginia college students after attending the George WashingtonUniversity National Conference in the spring of 1993. The D7 family was originally composed of the College of William and Mary, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Norfolk State University, Tidewater Community College, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University joined soon thereafter. D7 was formally inducted in the fall of 1993 during the second National Dialogue, which was held in Rochester, New York.
Bringing Communities Together.
The emergence and existence of D7 was influenced and is continuallysupported by the large concentrated Filipino population of the Hampton Roads area. The Hampton Roads area serves as a great tool and resource for D7 with its active adult Filipino Community. D7 leaders also utilize the Filipino and Asian / Pacific Islander communities of the Richmond Metropolitan region and the Northern Virginia region.
A Tradition of Excellence.
D7 is one of the largest and most vast districts in the FIND. The great distance between the schools has presented many challenges, yet D7 has managed to host not one, but two National Dialogues; one at the University of Virginia in 1995 and the other at Old Dominion University in`1999. In the spring of 2005, D7 hosted the National Conference, which was held at the College of William and Mary. D7 is a strong and resilient district that has made great strides in Filipino American education with the establishment of an annual Mini-Dialogue and the implementation of the Standardizing Filipino American Studies program. In addition, D7 is proactive in addressing the issues and concerns facing Filipinos. D7 advocacy efforts include its partnership in the formation of the Virginia Chapter of Student Action for Veterans Equity (SAVE-VA).
