About MONEY & reviews
Money is an hour and a half hip-hop/chamber opera written by composer Gene Pritsker. It is an eclectic theater piece with the subject of money being its binding force. The music of this opera is a combination of electronic, chamber, hip-hop, rock, improvisation, etc. It is a culmination of Mr. Pritskers diverse spectrum of styles, which are influenced by his studies of various musical cultures. In Money I take a diverse array of poetry, raps, speeches, essays and quotes about money and set them to an eclectic musical context. Part 1 is for 2 singers, 2 rappers a mixed chamber quintet and samplestra (pre-recorded electronics). The Samplestra a surveys the subject of money as it applies to mortality, criminal enterprise, sex, art and most of all greed. Part 2 is for baritone, female rock voice, 2 rappers, male actor, female actor, trumpet, French horn, bass trombone, 2 electric guitars, cello, contra bass & drum set. I continue where Money 1 left off and look at money as it applies to gambling, politics, and love.-Gene PritskerNever had I heard Pritsker try to put all these elements together in one composition. Here, in Money, he does, and it is the apotheosis of his form. This is the best Pritsker work I have ever heard. We can only hope that Gene Pritsker, in his perfection of this very personal and idiosyncratic form and the strength of his exceptional talent, can reach the very pinnacle of the compositional mound. - Joseph Pehrson, The Music Connoisseur, Fall 2006Pritsker dissolves the artificial boundaries between high brow, low brow, classical, popular musics and elevates the idea that if its done well it is great music, regardless of the style or genre.- Joseph Pehrson, The Music Connoisseur, Fall 2001Genes rap songs are clever, complex - Barry L. Cohen,Etnafest: MONEY, opera hip hop The composer and rapper Gene Pritsker has managed to successfully merge elements of art music with the metropolitan hip hop, while maintaining a significant general usability. Absolutely impeccable performance.....The response of the public was certainly enthusiastic......Several minutes of applause at the end of a show that has managed to involve all viewers- Giorgio Romero, Soqquadro.org"..refreshing, exciting, in-your-face real, and the music tracks were like nothing this reviewer has ever heard before (totally fascinating) and, clearly, superior to and occupying a different level than what is commonly heard in rap genre pieces as one walks the streets of the city, rides its subways, or just tries to get some sleep as a boombox with wheels passes by ones bedroom window late at night. -John de Clef Piñeiro, The Music Connoisseur

This is Bass Trombone, French Horn, and Trumpetas you have never heard, seen, or experienced before. Taylor/Clark/Hackl are creating their own brass trio literature. The tension initiated by the blending of improvisation and composed passages defies every attempt to categorize it. B3+ develops into much more than its individual partsit is music at its purest. It is as simple and as complex as that. You will hear an exciting meeting of Bartok, Pastorius, Schubert, Bach along with early classical music, jazz standards, free jazz, original music, authorized and non-authorized interpretations of pop tunes, and Welsh hymns. John, Franz and Dave began to play their instruments at an early age, and their open minds and searching ears got busy right away. Sometime later they earned advanced degrees from the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, and Manhattan School of Music. Real-world degrees were subsequently earned as they worked with great musicians all over the world. B3+ is where the experiences and ideas accumulated in orchestras, recording studios, jazz clubs, big bands, late-night jam sessions, and on long bus rides from gig to gigall get a chance to bubble and stew and become something unique. Think: Gunther Schuller meets P. Diddy meets Yo-Yo Ma meets Gil Evans meets Michael Jackson. Get the picture?
