~Health and Happieness go Hand in Hand~
A philosophy I've done a pretty good job applying in my own life and am passionate about sharing with others. As the RUSD Nutrition Educator, I have the sincerely rewarding opportunity to positively influence the lives of the wonderful community that is Rowland USD- students, staff, and families. I cannot express in words the satisfaction I feel when I know I've made a difference!

As a School Nurse and Nutrition Project Coordinator, I would like to welcome you to our website. I have been with the Rowland Unified School District since 1995, first as a medical aide in the Severely Handicapp Classes and a school nurse since 1998. I have a strong background in diabetes management, food analysis and nutriton, and am an enthusiastic participant in physcial activities. Our Nutrition Project captivates my love of student health and happiness!

We are ambassadors for healthy change on our campus and in our community.
We promote healthy eating and active living to our peers.
We are Noble.
We are CHAMPIONS FOR CHANGE.
The Harvest of the Month Program has been one of the most influential programs in the increase of fruit and vegetable consumption among students and families in California. Students are not only learning about and becoming familiar with California grown fruits and vegetables, through engaging classroom activities, they are gaining the skills to help them make healthier food choices. Preparing a recipe was reported as the number one classroom activity to have the most impact on their students. That being said, the RUSD Nutrition Project will be introducing a new program that will be used side by side with the HOTM newsletters and classroom activities: Tasting Trios!
Initially, the program will be implemented at selected Network for a Healthy Ca participating school sites. Our goal is to have 200 teachers implementing this program this year!
Participating teachers will receive a Tasting Trio box, each month, equipped with all of the ingredients (3 or less) to create a delicious and healthy snack with their students, featuring the HOTM fruit or vegetable of the month.
Even if your classroom is not participating in the program, you can still find the easy and delicious snack recipes here:

Gigi Said,
Hollingworth Elementary 5th Grade
After having her students compare the nutritional data of Romaine vs. Iceberg lettuce for a HOTM activity, Mrs. Said had her students write their persuasive essays (a 5th grade ELA standard) in a letter directed to our very own RUSD food services department.
Congratulations Gigi and keep up the good work!
At our qualifying intermediate schools, Alvarado, Giano, and Telesis, students will get the unique experience of making a recipe from start to finish in their classroom with Ms. Miano. Some of the popular menu items have been Chicken Tortas, Sesame Chicken Stir Fry, and the crowd favorite- which is almost entirely vegetables believe it or not- Zesty Asian Salad!
Who says you can't get middle school kids to eat their vegetables...
A Cooking Adventure!
In this cooking lesson, 6th grade students will embark on a journey back in time and half way around the world.
Using food as their time machine, they’ll visit Ancient Greece and experience a healthy way of eating from ancient times that is still enjoyed today in the Mediterranean and all over the world. The recipe: Grapes and Grains- a delicious barley salad with grapes and celery with a homemade olive oil, citrus vinaigrette.
Every month, select after school programs, get to participate in an interactive, fun, nutrition or physical activity lesson. Often times we do a cooking or food prep lesson. The focus of these lessons is to show students from grades 1-6th that they are capable of making healthy snacks from start to finish on their own, or with minimal help from Mom. The Harvest of the Month featured produce is always the main ingredient in our recipes!
Every year, 3 of our participating schools are selected to receive a Family Nutrition Night during their Open House event.
At this event, families are treated to:

Did you know that a 20 oz bottle of sugary drink such as soda can have as much as 17 teaspoons of sugar?
Most of us are not aware of how much sugar and extra calories we take in from what we are drinking. If you are reaching for soda, soft drinks, or even sugary juices when you are thirsty throughout the day, you may be taking in more calories than your body needs. And unless you exercise regularly, this can lead to obesity.
Join our campaign and pledge to live healthier and feel fit! Choose water as your thirst quencher- it's that easy!
Campaign begins March, 2012!!!
