Lao Youth Travel :: Community Based Ecotourism
The hill-tribe communities of Northern Laos are so far away from markets for goods and services that they have few sources of income. To survive they utilise the natural resources around them - growing rice, vegetables and rearing livestock, fishing the rivers, and harvesting wild foods and bamboo in the forest. Their economic situation means they struggle to cover shocks such as a poor rice season or illness.
Affording education is usually a dream. Eco-adventure tourism provides one of the few opportunities for earning income in these remote villages, making food, healthcare and education more affordable. Whats more, doing so provides a strong incentive for the villagers to protect the surrounding nature to ensure travellers keep coming.
thats money well spent!
Adventure expeditions are designed in conjunction with local communities to ensure each tour provides maximum benefits to villages involved. 85% of your payment for an overnight trek contributes directly into the communitys sustainable development via a communal village fund, an environment fund, payments for food and services, and locally sourced employment.
Therefore you can feel good knowing youre dollar provides you with a wonderful experience, whilst helping the local people overcome poverty and protect their environment.
The Bamboo School Foundation
Since 2006, weve worked in partnership with German non-profit organisation the Bamboo School Foundation. Together, our mission is to build an education and healthcare system in the remote hills and valleys of the Muang Ngoi district. LYT plays a crucial role in local support and advice, construction, promotion and transport logistics. So far weve built three schools and a boarding house for students from Lao Loum, Khmu and Hmong villages.
Our aim is to establish educational facilities starting from primary school through to college, to promote opportunity for Laos children. Furthermore, we have developed a special adventure expeditions trek in conjunction with the Bamboo School Foundation which includes homestays in these villages. By doing this we hope more families can afford having their children off at school rather staying back and working for the household.

Community Based Eco-tourism
Could you feed your entire family from $0.07 per day? *
Somehow, many of the extraordinary hill tribe families can scrape an existence with this income! However, its impossible to access basic needs such as warm clothes, education, medical treatment, and even food in a bad crop year on this income. Markets are simply too far away. Thats why Lao Youth Travel works together with the BambooSchool Foundation, and several other international donors to ensure our Discovery Expeditions are more than simply an experience they provide an opportunity for villagers to generate income within their own village.
With all our Discovery Expeditions, itineraries are designed in close consultation with villagers to ensure benefits are maximised and equally shared. 75% of your payment for an overnight trek contributes directly into the communitys sustainable development via a communal village fund, an environment fund, payments for food and services, and locally sourced employment. This is a much higher percentage than any other tour companies in Laos, meaning that Lao Youth Travel is the #1 poverty-alleviation tourism operator in the country. To read more about our community work, click here.
*A joint Lao Youth Travel/Bambooschool Foundation study found that the families living in some of the Nam Ous hilltribe villages live from 7 cents per day.
