An Introduction

This website was created in order to document and archive the iconic 1977 Australian film 'BACKROADS'. The Australian film industry has for many years failed to actively record and restore the history of filmmaking in Australia. As such, a significant number of films which once shaped the culture of Australian cinema, have been lost, forgotten or remain undocumented.



The same can be said for a number of cinemas, which prior to digitalization were a paramount part of daily living and social activity.

Deakin University in association with the AFI Research Collection are aiming to restore the history of Australian Film through preservation methods including the creation of archives to make this information publicly accessible. This is the primary aim of  the unit AAM219 Contemproary Australian Cinema.
