Quick shot review
Cursive
Beauty Bar
June 30th
If the capacity in the back patio at the beauty bar is 300, then there were surely 400 people packed in to watch Cursive play on June 30th.
But neither the cramped area, nor the 95 degree heat stop the die hard fans from waving their fists to the melodic beats or clapping furiously after each near perfect song.
Arriving late and not being too familiar with Cursive, I didn't know who was playing as I approached the bar.
Being just a little after 11pm, the thought of a headliner being on stage at this time was laughable.
Not till I heard the song "From the hips" did I realize who was on stage, and to my amazement, the laugh was on me as it took a few minutes to jockey myself through the crowd and just a few feet inside the door of this sold out show.
Once inside however, it was a real treat to hear just how good this band is and just how good the sound was balanced.
For me the cherry on top was listening to the ambient horn riffs hover over the driving drum beats, emanating from the strangest looking French style horn.
Soon the band wrapped up their set and left the stage to the sounds of a crowd shouting Cursive! and the Cursive merch crew shouting Slayer!
This must have tugged just right at the bands heartstrings because the band returned to play a few more songs.
As for me, I had to retreat inside to the air conditioned bar and grab a little TLC from an ice cold beer, feeling Cursives brilliant performance wash over me.
Or maybe it was just sweat.
