WHAT'S HAPPENING Halloween HALLOWEEN
The first grade class had a successful 2011 Halloween party. We all came dressed and were ready to scare. Our costumes ranged from a cowgirl to Luigi to magicians. It was fun to look at all the costumes and makeup. We finished off the day with a school Halloween parade and classroom party. THANK YOU TOO ALL OF THE FAMILIES FOR THE DELICIOUS SNACKS and to the parents and grandparents who helped.

Reading
Long u was added to our list of long vowels. We now know four long vowel sounds. "Super E" helps us remember when we need to make the long vowel sound.
Our story for the week was called "The Knee High Man". This story was different than our past stories. It was a play and a folktale. We had fun assigning parts and acting out the play in front of our class.
"The Knee High Man" taught us a lesson- Don't wish to look or act differently. We talked about the pros and cons of being a kid vs. an adult.

WILDCAT Respectful, Responsible, Safe
River Ridge School
Every student has the opportunity to earn Wildcat cards for being respectful, responsible or safe. The child's card is then entered
into a class bucket. Every other week, during announcements, a student's name is drawn from the bucket. They are rewarded with a prize for making good choices and their picture is hung in front of the office.
At the end of each month all classroom teachers nominate one student who has consistently been respectful, responsible and safe. The child is announced during a small assembly and wins Wildcat goodies and a letter of praise from the principal.

Mrs. Natalie Byrne
Dear First Grade Families,
Welcome to first grade! My name is Mrs. Byrne and I will be your child's teacher this year. I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year working with your first grader.
This is my third year teaching at River Ridge Elementary. I completed my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin of Platteville in May 2009. My three years at River Ridge have been very enjoyable and I am so honored to be teaching at such a supportive and enthusiastic school district. Teaching is my passion and I am thrilled to teach your child.
This is a very exciting time for your child to develop their own passions towards learning as we embrace the new adventures together. They will go through many transitions and learn how to read fluently, write stories, add, subtract, and much more. I hope you make your child's learning experienecs fun and interesting and I hope to inspire a love for learning that will last forever.
I have a strong belief in parent-teacher communication because I feel that we are all working towards the same goal. Throughout the year, I will be communicating with you through e-mails, notes sent home, telephone calls, and parent-teacher conferences. Feel free to contact me any time.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to a great school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Byrne
