This week's homework will focus on geometry. We have been working with 2-dimentional shapes including circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, pentagons, and hexagons. We are focusing on the number of sides and corners (vertices). The students are learning how to compare the shapes using the geometric attributes as well as size and color.
Nightly reading is expected from every student. The level that each student is working on varies dependent upon their assessments. The students are to read their books nightly and study their sight word cards if they have them. If your child already knows more than 50 sight words, the standard for this inie weeks, they will not have sight word cards to study.
Grammar homework this week will focus on antonyms. The students did a very good job on the nouns, verbs, and adjectives!!

What's New???Report Cards will be going home soon. Please refer to the Parent Guide to Standards Based Report Cards that went home at the beginning of school for clarification. Please expect there to be areas that your child is still working on (2's or 1's) because the standandards are meant to be worked on throughout the year. The students should not be able to accomplish ALL the standards in the first nine weeks of school. As always, if you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.Don't forget that the first Friday of the month is always Chick-Fil-A night for DCE. Stop by the Bradley Park location and get a meal. Don't forget to tell them you are there for Dr. Baugh's class!!!

ReadingTo begin the year we will be focusing on using our "schema", or what we have stored in our minds, to better understand a story. We will be reading books that encouarge us to make connections with the story or characters. Try this at home!! When you read a story with or to your child ask them what the story makes them think about. Has anything like that happened to them? Do the characters remind them of someone they know?WritingThe beginning of this year brings narrative (story) writing to our classroom. We will be learning about how stories work and how we can create our own interesting stories. When focusing on writing we really focus on idea more than mechanics at this point. Do we want the students to be able to spell words correctly? Of course, but if you write a perfectly spelled story that really doesn't say anything, all you really have is some pretty words on a page, not a thoughtful reflection of what you were thinking.MathFor the first couple of weeks we are going to be reviewing concepts that the students learned in kindergarten. I will be assessing each student's knowledge and making sure the lessons that we plan address each need. If you haven't sent composition books to school with your child please do because they will need one for their math journal this year.ScienceIn science we are focusing on water in the weather. We will be talking about the different kinds of weather and how water is related to it (solid, liquid, vapor). If you have any resources we would love to borrow them!!
