Community Need
A Day in the Life currently serves 4th and 5th grade students in the South Los Angeles area. These areas are located in the heart of poverty-stricken South Central Los Angeles, where students constantly face violence and crime. Their everyday circumstances can sometimes outweigh their desire for a higher quality of life.
Gang recruitment, exposure to drugs, and juvenile crime often begin in middle school, as early as age 11. After-school hours are a peak time for risky behaviors, and unsupervised youth are at a higher risk of being victims of crime and violence between 3pm and 4pm. Students who do not participate in extracurricular activities are 49% more likely to use drugs and 37% more likely to engage in sexual activity. These youth, surrounded by gangs, drugs, and crime, often think that
this is all that life has to offer. They do not believe a successful future is possible, because they haven't been exposed to positive role models who can guide them. A Day in the Life teaches students about the direct correlation between school performance and the ability to experience
life outside the inner city, and gives students inspirational experiences that transform their attitudes and life goals.
Community Impact
By exposing inner-city youths to experiences and role models that stress the importance of academic success in connection to higher education and career success, they learn that with hard work and focus, their dreams can be an achievable reality. We give children the tools to make positive life choices that result in a higher quality of life for themselves, their families, their peers, and their communities.
Your support will help students learn how to set life goals and the steps to reach them!
