Artist Bio
Monica Welborn has been making art as long as she can remember. She has memories of always wanting to create. Being the daughter of an artist Mother, she was always exposed to drawing, painting, and creative artifacts from around the world.Born March 13th, 1985 in the rural area of Harrisburg, PA, Welborn was exposed to nature first hand. Her parents recall her always wanting to be outside in the fields, grass and dirt to explore. She believes this exploration of nature still resides in her work yet through a metaphoric visualization. She has used nature and the idea of a cyclical universal energy to inspire her recent works. She believes that her inspiration is a gift that can only be received visually through art itself. Believing that her work is somewhat of a portal for her unconscious intuition, painting becomes a relaxing yet intense form of therapy and meditation. With this in mind, she refers to a quote from abstract artist Jackson Pollock,“When I am in my painting, I’m not aware of what I’m doing. It is only after a sort of “get acquainted” period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.” Welborn studied fine art as an undergraduate at Rider University in New Jersey. And received her MFA from The New York Studio School in Manhattan, winning a full scholarship her first year. In those institutions she studied how to traditionally draw and paint the human figure. But soon her art took more of an abstract direction when her work seemed to gravitate towards less representation and it seemed the best suited way to depict and express the metaphor of her mind’s fast pace. Immediately after graduate school Welborn was invited to show at a National juried exhibition at the First Street Gallery in Chelsea. Then showed new pieces again in the group show titled “Particular Light” at The Painting Center in Chelsea. In the press release for “Particular Light” Welborn’s work is reviewed as follows,“ Her bold, colorful work records this tracking of moments of feeling and experience, ordering and re-ordering space before our eyes. Often, she employs strong black strokes to create patterns reminiscent of African and Native American weaving, which anchor these feelings states in a context of ritual and traditional sources of understanding.” Welborn was featured in Rider Universities Top 30 Under 30 in 2010 for her achievements in the arts as well as success in teaching as an Adjunct professor, teaching in NYC and New Jersey. She also collaborated with a graphic artist to create a historical mural in the Ben Franklin Elementary school located in Pennsylvania. During her entire career Monica Welborn’s work continues to expand with her expansion of self-awareness. She believes as she continues exploring ideas and everyday energy shifts it is directly reflected in her chosen outlet, her paintings. With hopes to continue to work and gain more exposure, she is grateful to visually share her vision with others open to receive it.
