When pricing out custom photography, it is important to research the pricing structure of each photographer. Some will build their business on print costs (leading to a lower session fee) whereas others will build in the reverse manner. When considering various photographers, be sure to price out a complete package with each, not just a sitting.
At MU Photography, it is our belief that in order to make printing, and thus preserving, your memories as easy as possible we have a "what you see is what you get" approach to pricing . The prices below include EVERYTHING on the Personalized Portraiture page allowing us to offer very value-concious pricing on our prints (in fact, our print prices are compentative with many chain printing locations!). As with most professional photographers, I do not offer the option to purchase raw digital files. The mastery of photography is and always has been not only in capturing a gorgeous image in camera but also in the careful post-processing of that image (either in the traditional darkroom or the digital darkroom) to shine to it's truest potential.
It is my belief that by distributing raw images (either the negatives or raw digital files) the product is not complete. I would compare this to a cake artist distributing their dough because people really enjoy the final baked and decorated cake. Yes, the dough (i.e. the image straight out of camera) does need to be created and mixed in a professional manner taking all ingredients into consideration (in photography this would be consideration of mood, subject, lighting, framing, composition, leading elements, background, subject interaction, etc, etc...), but it is through the precise baking and decorating process (in photography this would be the considerations that go into post-processing such as cropping, layering, dodging, burning, sharpening, consideration of saturation, contrast, masking, etc, etc...) that create and allow the final product to shine.
Because the professional capture of an image in camera is only the first step in professional photography, I always do post-processing on all of my images (in fact, even my personal photos that I post and share have all been through post-processing). This does not mean that getting things right in camera and knowledge of these skills is not important (it is!), but rather that the mastery of these skills, carefully married with the equally important mastery of post-processing is what leads to professional images.
If I were to distribute raw images, I think I would feel that I had only half-done my job as a photographer, which I don't believe is fair to any client, the photography industry, myself or future generations.
Of course I recognize that many people would like as many images as possible from their session. As such, I always offer the option to customize your package further by adding additonal finished images.
Surprisingly enough, light-scribing actually has nothing to do with Star Wars ;) Light-scribing is the burning of graphics into a specific layer on a specialized dvd as a means of labelling.
At MU Photography, we always use light-scribing to personally label each and everyone of our dvds. The reason for this is because light-scribing is one of the very best methods for archival labelling of dvds that we have discovered to date. This will help ensure that the data on your disc (and therefore those precious memories) are left intact and accessible for years to come.
Many people look to paper labels for dvds. Although these can be pretty, they often lead to many problems as the paper and glue ages. Adding the paper label to the dvd increases the thickness of the dvd which then leads to potential issues with the dvd not reading correctly in some readers. Over time, as the glue ages and the paper lifts, some people may also experience the "exploding dvd" syndrome where dvds with paper labels get caught in the dvd reader as they are spinning at high rpm's and shatter within the machine, destroying all data that was on there.
Another alternative method of labelling dvds is to use permanent ink. At MU Photography, we do not believe that this is a safe, archival method for labelling as, over time, the ink may bleed through to the data side of the dvd, thus making it unreadable.
Of course, over time, no matter how archival the dvd, access to the data may become limited as the reader for the data disc becomes outdated. As an example, who among us still has, or uses a 3.5 inch disk drive? I challenge you to find a computer that does. And that was the standard for data storage just over a decade ago! Imagine where we'll be in another decade! It is for this reason that it is highly recommended that you print your images through a pro lab. If for no other reason, than to offer the option to future generations of discovering your gorgeous images in a dusty old shoe box ;)
With all these considerations, and many more (and also because light-scribing just looks so darn awesome!) we have chosen to use light-scribing to ensure that the images of your session will be available as long as possible and we highly recommend printing your images for assurance of preserving your memories for generations to come.
