Telone® II is injected into the soil as a liquid and immediately converts to a gas, creating a zone of protection around developing roots. Methyl Bromide

Methyl bromide is a naturally occurring chemical which is produced by oceans, forest and grass fires, and volcanoes. It also can be man-made. Manufactured methyl bromide is used to fumigate buildings, soils and stored products.

As a soil fumigant , methyl bromide combats a host of devastating organisms and diseases of crops. These include nematodes, soil-borne fungi, phytophtora, weeds and diseases which attack roots and thus, destroy and kill the plants. Disease-compromised crops result in lower quality produce and less yield, which means that consumers would have to pay more for a lower quality product if there was no soil fumigation.

Methyl bromide , when needed to destroy pests and diseases in the soil, is used at most once a year. For fruit and nut tree orchards and vineyards, it is used only once every 10-30 years.

Methyl bromide is used in the soil before planting begins. For this reason, it does not come into contact with crops while they are growing. There is no food safety issue; there simply is no crop residue.

California has extensive laws which are administered under the California Environmental Protection Agency - Department of Pesticide Regulation (CALEPA/DPR) regarding the use of any pesticides in agricultural production. CALEPA/DPR has monitoring and reporting programs to assure growers are abiding by the laws.

CALEPA/DPR also has developed and set forth extensive permit conditions regarding the use of soil fumigants -- such as methyl bromide -- to provide for the safety of farmers, farm workers and the general public. These permit conditions include "buffer zones" which establish the distances and more than a 100-fold margin of safety between applications and any occupied structures including schools. The manual which governs over methyl bromide applications is two-inches thick!

Recently , as part of the Re-Registration Decision (RED) process, the USEPA has also adopted extensive regulations on the use of methyl bromide nationwide, many of which parallel the laws already in place in California.

Methyl bromide is a very important tool which is used to protect against the introduction of diseases and pests in ports and through shipping;, to preserve food after harvest from cockroaches, rodents, maggots, weevils, moths and beetles; as well as in soil fumigation to protect plants including those which provide vegetables, fruits and nuts.

All tests on methyl bromide to date have shown that it is NOT a carcinogen. In 1994, an independent scientific panel appointed by the state to review data relative to pesticides decided by a 7-0 vote that the evidence does not support a determination that methyl bromide is a reproductive toxicant. The USEPA also came to this same conclusion.

Methyl bromide , as well as other agricultural chemicals, can only be applied by qualified application specialists who have received extensive training in pest control and chemical usage. Applications are monitored by county agricultural commissioners and must be conducted in accordance with stringent state and federal regulations.

The loss of methyl bromide will reduce our ability to control food borne diseases such as Salmonella, E. Coli., etc. carried by vectors such as cockroaches, rodents, maggots, weevils, beetles, etc.

For over 75 years chloropicrin has benefited agriculture by controlling pathogens and soil pests. This product is supplied to growers on six continents, allowing for the increased production of food on a global basis.

Application of chloropicrin by certified professionals involves injecting the product in the soil and covering the treated area with plastic mulch. In addition to controlling diseases and pests, chloropicrin breaks down into plant nutrients for not only the crops but the helpful microorganisms that exist in the soil as well. The end result is increased yields and improved productivity of high value crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers.

Though chloropicrin can be used alone for soils with serious soil borne disease present, it is typically blended with other products for improved herbicidal and nematocidal properties. Since one of the attributes of chloropicrin is that it is a lachrymator (tear producer), it also serves as an excellent pre-warning indicator for potential exposure.

THE STORKAN-HANES-McCASLIN RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The Storkan Foundation, in honor of Richard Storkan - former President of Trical, Inc. was founded in 1987 to encourage graduate research on soil-borne diseases. With the passing in 1993 of Jerry Hanes, another founding member of Trical, the name was changed to The Storkan-Hanes Research Foundation. Storkan, Hanes, and McCaslin, the three founding members of Trical, were always willing to provide time, money, fumigants, equipment, etc. to further research in soil diseases. Sadly, the last of the founding members of Trical, Bob McCaslin, passed away in November 2000. In early 2002, the name was changed to The Storkan-Hanes-McCaslin Research Foundation.

A major goal of the foundation is to encourage research by offering financial assistance to graduate students who have demonstrated interest in soil-borne diseases and their control. Postdoctoral candidates are also eligible. The Foundation policy is one of contributing to the education of a student, with Grants being awarded on a yearly basis.

The original Board Members were Jerry Hanes, Dean Storkan, Irene Storkan, Tom Duafala, John Kahle, Steve Wilhelm, Albert Paulus and Don Munnecke, Chairman. Sadly, Dr. Wilhelm passed away in 2002. As of 2003, the Foundation has awarded a total of $260,000 to 45 students across the United States. In addition to the cash award, the Foundation supplies airfare for the newly elected Fellows of the Storkan-Hanes-McCaslin Foundation, to attend the annual American Phytopathological Society (APS) meeting. At the meeting, the Foundation presents a plaque to the Fellows at a special luncheon attended by the newly elected Fellows, their research sponsor, other previous Fellows and members of the Storkan-Hanes-McCaslin Foundation.
