Where is the property?
One of the biggest challenges sportsman have in locating good property is finding something close enough for an easy drive, yet adequately remote to offer good hunintg. This property is 2 hours and 20 minutes from Denver; remote enough to offer little/no hunting pressure.
If you're careful and quiet when you walk the property you'll easilly see 30 or more deer on every trek and ducks in nearly all of the sleughs.
Situated on 411 Acress in Northeastern Colorado, near the town of Sedgwick, Platte River Outdoors boasts outstanding hunting and absolute tranquility.
The property runs for nearly a mile along the south side of the river, where 225 acres is completely tree covered. Another 185 of farm ground is immediately contiguous where two pivots and wells, irrigate corn and wheat.
A modest quality newer home (modular), older farm house, and large quanset hut are also on the property. The home has propane heat, electricity, water and satellite Television.
There is only one word that describes the deer hunting on this property; UNBELIEVABLE.
The property is clearly a Whitetail trophy property. The number of large bucks on the river property is exceptional and will continue to be that way as long as the ranch continues to be responsibly managed.
In 2010 we allowed 3 buck tags ont he property; all 3 were filled with good bucks and there are many more like the one pictured here that marked a 158 gross green score. The Colorado Division of Wildlife labele that property a "deer sanctuary".
We hunt primarily on our mountain property for mule deer and, as such, this property is lightly hunted creating a home for over 60 deer; nearly all Whitetails. Prior to 2010 we've only had three hunters deer hunt; all three took nice bucks in a matter of hours. The first year a respectable 8 point buck was taken, followed by a 140 class buck and a 190 class non typical that had 6 brow tines!
The river portion of the property is completely tree covered. The west end is very heavily wooded making it ideal for the archery or black powder hunter due to the number of trails running throughout. Several small ponds are also located on this portion of the property.
The east portion of the river property is also tree coverd but sports numerous park-like areas offering perfect "huntabily" for the rifle hunter as well as archery and black powder hunter.

Opening day duck hunting on the river is generally a fast-paced, and very successful shoot. Most years we fill out opening morning by setting decoys on the eastern portion of the river. If we come up just short of our limit we jump shoot the many sloughs that run through the property to finish up our limit.
Early ducks are Mallards, Gadwall, Teal. Later in the season, when the duck hunting really picks up, we shoot almost exclusively mallards.
The duck hunting on the river, after opening weekend, isn't generally very good, although the snowy days can be great. We usually pick up duck hunting again around Christmas time, when the northerns are down. The duck numbers at that time are tremendous. On bluebird days we do a quick shoot at daylight on the sleughs in front of the house and then hunt geese the rest of the time. On snowy days, the sleughs are great; all day long!
Goose hunting is great from Christmas through February, although opening weekend is usually pretty good as well. We hunt the fields in our goose pits primarily at that time, although the river is every bit as good; it's just a little more work hauling decoys :) . This year, on the last weekend of the season, we took 23 Greater Canadas.
The vast majority of the time we take Greater Candas, although we do pick up some Lesser's later in the season.
Bird hunting at Sedgwick consists of Quail, Doves, Turkeys, and Pheasants.
Doves are hunted on the opener and, most years, we fill out. Depending on the weather it can be a quick, morning-only shoot or it could take all day to fill out.
There are over 200 resident Turkeys on the property. We do not hunt them.
Quail are abundant on the property. Generally we hunt Quail during the day after the morning duck hunt and/or during down periods while goose hunting. A two hour Quail hunt will usually put up at least three large coveys of Quail. It takes much longer to hunt the entire river parcel so on longer hunts you should expect many more birds.
We hunt Pheasants occasionally but the Phesant hunting on the property is only, "OK" since, by the time Pheasant season rolls around the corn has been harvested. Pheasant hunting in the area however, including Colorado Walk In properties, can be very good.
The Farm portion of the property is 185 acres. 135 acres are under two pivots and typically planted in corn. The corners are generally planted in wheat.
The Farm is custom farmed. The farm typically produces about 25,000 bushels of corn per year.
A large quansot hut is situated on the farm property. The building has a concrete floor throughout and large sliding lockable doors.
Two wells and privots are also on the property.
