2011 VRC World Champions!
Egg-citing News!
On April 16, 2011 Green Egg Robotics became the first high school team to have won 2 VRC World Tournament Championships. They now have won three world championship titles in three years having won the World Robot Skills title in 2010 along with a pair of World tournament titles in 2009 and 2011. In addition the team won the Science Division Amaze Award for the unique design and construction of their robot Fred IV. The 2011 event was held near Orlando, Florida at the Disney ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. Over 10,000 participants competed at the college, high school and middle school levels. 416 of the top qualified Vex teams representing 10 countries competed this year at Disney in the high school division.
In 2010, Green Egg Robotics finished as World Finalists as the top US team and won the World robot Skills Championship. In 2009 the team won the VRC World Championship Tournament and were awarded the World Build Award.
About Green Egg
Robotics competitions are fast becoming more prevalent and popular throughout the world for middle and high school-aged students. These competitions serve as a stepping stone in inspiring future leaders, inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs to expand their knowledge and skills in math, science, and engineering.
Formed in 2007, Green Egg Robotics consists of four homeschooled students now ranging in ages 15-18. They have competed in local, state, regional, and world robotics competitions. Our little team is student-created and student-driven. Team members are self-taught in robotics design and programming, and are inspired to achieve innovative design and building excellence.
Green Egg Robotics came to being when Leland, who was 11 at the time, decided that he wanted to start a Vex robotics team in order to design and build robots. He received a Vex starter kit for Christmas and saved his money earned from odd jobs to buy more robot parts. Next, he enlisted his older brother James, and friends Kieran and Josef - a team was born. Upon arriving at their very first competition against older high school teams the registrar asked them if they were a real team because they were so much smaller than their competitors. By the end of the day after they had won their first robotics competition there was no question as to whether they were for real.
Sunny Side Up
The team has had an incredible level of success both on and off the playing field during its brief history. We have entered 20 tournaments since inception and have won 17 of them. Also, we have won 5 Excellence Awards, 6 Robot Driving Skills Awards (including the 2010 World Robot Skills Championship), the 2009 World Build Award, 1 Creativity Award, 1 Amaze Award, 1 Innovate Award and 1 Judges Award.
With the achievements have come opportunities for team exposure and outreach in the community. This past year we appeared on WGBH radio for a live interview on the Callie Crossley Show. We were interviewed for a promo for a PBS television documentary in 2008. The team story has been covered in numerous local and regional newspapers, and online magazines. A photograph of our team celebrating the winning moment of the 2009 World championship appears regularly in a local newspaper for their ad campaign. The team has provided educational demonstrations at schools and for a Worcester cable TV channel. Last year, the team produced our annual YouTube promotional video which has drawn viewers from more than 75 different countries. (To view this video click on robot videos on the upper menu).
Kieran: Age 16
I enjoy driving and programming robots, skiing, climbing mountains and writing, I have been homeschooled my whole life. I joined Green Egg Robotics because I am a friend of James and Lee.
Leland: Age 15
I love to design and build robots. I also love to play soccer and play for FC United soccer club. I didn't really join the robotics team. I kind of made the team with my brother James. We formed the team because I love doing robotics and I wanted to compete in the robotics competitions.
Josef: Age 18
I live in Worcester, Mass. I joined the team mid season 2008-09, because I enjoy building and designing robots. Besides robotics I enjoy playing guitar, snowboarding, and skateboarding. I have graduated to team mentor.
James : Age 18
I like playing soccer, snowboarding and any sports. I also enjoy playing guitar. I joined the robotics team because my brother made me.... just kidding..... I joined the robotics team because I enjoy competing and designing robots.
