El sueño de la razón produce monstruos.
Francisco José De Goya
El sueño de la razon produce monstruos.
Sally Duvall, blonde and twenty-one, aspires to become America’s next singing sensation. Her undead boyfriend Joey's ambitions are a trifle more modest and boil down to wanting his ass inside her house and his lips on her neck.
All in all, Joey isn'’t so different from Sally’s previous beaus.
In the world of Monstruos, a monster by any name will get the job done. Be it the latently psychotic misanthrope rife with self-pity; the fanatical partisan convinced of possessing the sole true key to God’s kingdom; the angsty adolescent desperate to show the world he’'s not a dime a dozen; the gun-toting republican willing to let his rifle do the talking; or the disillusioned cubicle dweller ready to sacrifice everything for one night of peace and quiet.
Monstruos contains sardonic short stories, diary entries provided by American-Dutch teenager Nancy Strickland, and a novella (The Lady Scorned) written in motion picture screenplay format.
Marc Hendriks (1977) studied Film Science at the University of Amsterdam. He currently lives in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
“I sure hope this book is a sequel to Keri Smith'’s Wreck this Journal because I couldn't resist the urge to tear and burn my copy beyond recognition.”
- Courtland van Houten, The Evening Star
read excerpt
Before you go ahead and give those blue links on the order page a little love tap, you need to understand that this book's leitmotif is Death. If that's not exactly what you had in mind when you went online in search of some light reading or the perfect gift for that special someone, I won't hold it against you if you decide to take your business elsewhere.
Thanks for stopping by and have a nice day!
You're still here? Hah, I could tell you have a morbid streak. Boy, do I have the macabre treat for you. We'll start our literary matinee with two stories that are actually suitable for your knee-high offspring. During intermission, we'll explore death in art and reality by taking a closer look at the adapted book Into the Wild. After that, it's back inside the auditorium for Vigil's feature presentation: the titular novella-as-screenplay, which takes place in the world of The Lady Scorned (featured in Monstruos). Vigil is neither sequel nor prequel. This standalone piece chronicles the adventures of Matthew Stanford, a disillusioned college dropout in hot pursuit of the undead bastards who killed his main squeeze's kid sister.
While we wait for the bus to take us home, college student Nancy Strickland will provide entertainment by giving us her two cents on Lars von Trier's film Antichrist, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga, and James Nguyen's so-bad-it's-good environmental horror film Birdemic.
Sounds good? Dig in!
(Vigil is now also available as an e-book on Apple's iBooks.)
Is this really the latest Depp/Burton collaboration? Who the hell is James Nguyen? Why does the tagline contain a grammatical error? Read Vigil and learn the answers to these and many more urgent questions!
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."
William Congreve
At the risk of sounding as if I’'m accepting some kind of award, I’'d like to take a moment here and express my gratitude to a trio of stout young women:
College student Nancy Strickland, who allowed me to edit, translate, revise, and include a handful of her diary entries. Her book of essays, Landfill , is now available.
Multitalented Lindsey Heath, whose amazing photographs make the cover of Vigil such an eye catcher.
Artist Estefania Fernández Goedkoop, for her encouragement and unfaltering support.

Howdy! How goes it?
Did you know that every five seconds a writer dies from malnutrition?
Wordsmiths do not thrive in other professions. They hand you back the wrong amount of change when working the cash register, deliver your pizzas to the old bat next door, and are prone to cause core meltdowns when employed by a nuclear power plant.
For decades, people have looked the other way when confronted with a bag of bones clutching a "Will write mediocre prose for food" sign.
This travesty needs to stop.
Monstruos and Vigil are now available as pocketbooks that, well, fit right into your pocket* so you can take them with you wherever you go. They also fit under the short leg of your sofa.
Order your copies today! Ten percent of the net proceedings will go directly to the starving author, who's all set to spend the money on such bare necessities as alcoholic beverages, Whoppers, tobacco, and women of ill repute.
You, too, can make a difference!
Your friendly neighborhood scribe,
Marc
