Line and color Paintings
Our little artists have just completed a great project where they learned all about lines. We first learned the different lines and their names (straight, wavy, curved, zig zag, jagged, scalloped, thick, and thin) by playing a game called Name That Line. We then painted these lines all over our papers. The next art day their lines were dry so we painted the white spaces, experimenting with color mixing. They saw how white mixed with any color makes it lighter, and black mixed with any color makes it darker. The students got to mix the primary colors together to make secondary colors. These paintings turned out AMAZING! Our artists were so proud that they made these beautiful creations (and they learned something too!)

Pablo Picasso Portraits
In Kindergarten we studied about the famous artist Pablo Picasso. We learned all about his life and his painting styles. He was sad for a long time and used a lot of blue, art historians call this his blue period. When he met a special girl and fell in love, his paintings became happier, and he used a lot of reds, this was called his rose period. Cubism is the style that we focused on the most, this was where everything seemed flat, and faces seemed mixed up. Cubist painters tried to show things from many angles all at the same time. We drew face parts from the front and from the side, and placed them in a common basket. We then cut out heads, and hair, and students closed their eyes and reached into the baskets to get their eyes, nose, mouth and ears for their person. The portraits ended up fantastic; all mixed up just like a cubist painting! It is so important for young artists to know that art does not have to look real to be appreciated.
