2nd Grade
Original Works Magnet Project: Animals
Second graders made animal pictures for their magnet project. The students used a ruler to draw a border all around their paper, then filled it with pattern. They used markers to color in a pattern. They chose an animal and drew it very large in the middle of the paper. After tracing every line with a permanent marker, they used warm and cool colors to add color. The end result was some super freytastic pictures!
Creek and Cherokee Friendship Pouches
In the second grade students study the Creek and Cherokee Indians as a part of their Social Studies Curriculum. In art class we extended their learning by making friendship pouches in the Creek and Cherokee tradition. We discussed art that is functional-it has a purpose or use. Friendship pouches were made to carry gifts to loved ones when the Native Americans would go visiting. We made our pouches out of colored felt to look like leather. We sewed the edges just like the Creek and Cherokee would have, by poking holes in the fabric first and then sewing with a dull needle. They decorated their pouches with traditional Native symbols. These beautiful pieces are both nice to look at and functional!
