*written by Ali
We were on a 3 day cruise with Royal Carribbean and on the 3rd day went to Nassau, Bahamas. We decided to rent a jet ski for an hour. After some haggling and shouting, and basically a lot of drama from two separate jet ski renters, we got our jet ski and headed out.
*We were off of Paradise Island, and surrounding the island are multiple small islands. These islands have small secluded beaches along them, but are otherwise just jagged, sharp rocks. We found one island which had a dolphin encounter on one end and a small alcove beach on the other. We pulled up onto this beach to hang out.
*I was writing in the sand, things like: Ali <3 Matt 4ever etc, just being silly. He said, Im going to go to that end of the beach and write my own thing; you write something over here and dont look!
*So a few minutes later he comes back and puts his hands over my eyes and begins leading me blindly to his end of the beach. I felt water and started laughing, please dont throw me in!!!
*Finally he told me to open my eyes; there in the sand he had written marry me?; he got on one knee and held out the ring. I was so choked up I couldnt speak! I grinned and nodded a lot and finally said, YES! (I then asked him are you kidding?! over and over, and when I looked at the ring asked IS THIS REAL?! because it was just so elaborate and beyond anything I ever expected.)
*Our time with the jet ski was nearly up so we packed up and got back on; about 15 ft off the beach the back end began to sink completely under water! I swam to shore and then took our things out of the flooded watertight compartment (passports, books, wallets, etc). We had about an hour before our cruise left Nassau, so Matt decided to be proactive and climb over the rocks and run to the dolphin encounter place.
*In the meantime, I tried to wave down boats, and intermittently giggled to myself because we were engaged; I couldnt even be angry.
*Matt ran 35 minutes straight to the dolphin encounter; when he got there the lady in charge told him he should have let the ski sink. They dont care, its not a big deal, but you shouldnt have left the girl alone! Its dangerous there; even Im not allowed to go there alone!!
*So of course Matt was all worried now. They hopped on an ATV and took off over the island as far as the rocks would let them; then Matt ran the rest of the way. When he got to our tiny alcove, I was gone.
*Terrified, he was pacing back and forth, wondering what had happened, calling for me, thinking he had just proposed and then LOST me forever.
*Finally, he asked the ATV man if they had radioed from the dolphin cove, saying that if I had been picked up/rescued, I would have gone back for him. There was no news on that end of the island.
*By now it was 4:35. Our cruises last boarding call was at 4:30.
*Finally, Matts ATV friend hears from the patrol boats that they have me back at Paradise Island (the jet ski company had found me and taken me back, saying they could come back and find Matt in the time it took him to return to the alcove); I had gone back hoping to contact the cruise from the mainland, but that plan failed. So basically I waited 35 minutes in sheer terror hoping Matt would come back and find me.
*Finally we were reunited on Paradise Island and thrown onto another jet ski, driven by a 250 lb Bahamian. We drove full throttle around the ENTIRE of Paradise Island to the port. We were sunburned, hadnt eaten/had water since 9am, were COVERED in sand, and holding our soaking wet towels, books, bags, etc.
*We took off running, hoping to catch the cruise. It was 4:55.
*We ran into a security guard who stopped us. Are you on the Majesty?
*YES!
*He radioed in, Ive got the last two, were coming!
*Apparently they had waited for us.
*So, he ushered us through the terminal, laughing with us, asking if we just couldnt pull ourselves away from snorkeling (yeah right).
*At the end of the terminal was a golfcart, which zoomed us up to the gangway of the ship. We were the last two to board.
*So, we got engaged, went into survival mode, and it FINALLY set in after we had rinsed off and put the ring back on me. The adventure solidified our knowledge that we never wanted to be without each other again.
*And thats the story!
