How it all started....
The Expo was born in 1983, coordinated by the local Mingenew Lions group, as a way to slow the decline in population around the region. The expo was planned as a fundraiser to give something back to the community, to give them something to work towards, to be part of the continuing existence of their towns.
The wheels were put in motion to create a machinery field day in the Midwest Agricultural region. The community banded together to prepare the Expo and clean up afterwards. Local sporting and community groups were organised to run the food and drink stalls and to this day any profits from the event are dispersed back to these groups, donations forwarded to local health service providers (e.g. Lions Eye Institute).
With the way the Expo has developed over the years it became necessary to spread the workload. This was achieved with the assistance of localized towns and their community members, who also benefit financially from the event by volunteering their work in leiu of payment to their associated clubs (e.g. St. Johns Ambulance, Silver Chain Nursing, Local Football Clubs, Local primary Schools, Church groups etc.).
Now approaching our 28th Annual Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo, the local community volunteers still band together, along surrounding towns who are still working beside us with the local sporting and service clubs, churches, school and businesses that benefit from this successful event.
Last year saw over 380 exhibitors, display agricultural machinery, merchandise, technology, computers, livestock, education, careers, health, homewares, recreational, lifestyle and general interest products and services to the 8000 people who came through the gates over the two day event. Exhibitors and public were entertained, fed and informed.
The Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo takes pride in the knowledge that all members of the family have something to check out at Expo. It is perhaps one time of the year when sporting and town rivalries are put aside, so people of the Midwest can come together, keep up with the latest in agriculture, compare crop development, sewing classes, education, Health information, Entertainment or childrens antics and the one thing that draws them all together ............... rural life.
Innovation Leading the way
Mingenew has long been an innovator leading the way for Midwest Agriculture and has attracted the formation of these businesses operating in and around the Mingenew Shire.
Largest Grain Collection Point
The Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) grain facility is recognised as the largest inland grower fed, receival facility in the Midwest Region. December 2009 saw the Mingenew receival point break its previous total receivals record of 302,000 tonnes by taking in more than 315,000 tonnes.

Shire of Mingenew
Mingenew has a wealth of assets not always obvious at first glance. The change of seasons brings on a whole new landscape including climatic changes. There are a number of drives well worth undertaking throughout the year to gain a real perspective of Mingenew.
The name Mingenew derives from either:
* Minganu - Place of Many Ants or
* Mininoo - Place of Many Waters
Both of these names were used by Aboriginals from the area. Records indicate settlement of the district occurred in the 1850's, although Europeans explored the area prior to this date.
Since settlement, the area has been renowned for its agricultural achievements. Stock and grain have been the mainstays of the district with the CBH Grain Receivals Point being the largest inland facility in the Southern Hemisphere. The area has ample underground water supply, which aided the development of the settlement.
Council will endeavour to maintain and improve the quality of life in the Shire of Mingenew. The Council will strive for the recognition of a thriving and innovative community with an historical identity and encourage its future development and growth.
