Infra Red

IR photography uses a filter to cut out visible light, allowing only infra red rays through the lens. Photos must be taken in very bright light and exposure needs to be lengthy. The filter used for these photos required exposure times of around 30 seconds.South Point TempleSoon Tien Kong Temple honours three Chinese Gods - the Monkey God, the God of Prosperity, and the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin).South Point Temple OvenTemple ovens are used to burn "Hell" money. When the Gods receive money in the spirit world, they are made happy. In return, individuals are blessed with prosperity.South Point Temple UrnIncense sticks are lit and stuck into the sand that fills this urn. The smoke wards off evil spirits.Ghost TownPrior to 1960 a thriving mining community existed at South Point. The town was relocated to Poon Saan and bulldosed when the decision was made to mine the phosphate rich soil.Ruined PillarsThe remains of the South Point water tank.Ghost TrainThe remains of the train station at South Point.Christmas Island PhosphatesPhosphate mining has a long history on Christmas Island, dating back to 1895. There were no indiginous people, so for much of the Island's early history, indentured labour was brought from Singapore. These "Coolies" were treated like slaves. Conditions began to improve in 1975 when the Union of CI Workers was formed.Phosphate ShedTai Jin HouseTai Jin in Chinese means "Big Boss". From 1936 - 1995 the Island's many Administrators resided in this grand, isolated home. Located on Smith Point, Tai Jin House looks out across Flying Fish Cove.Gun amongst TreesThis 6" artillery gun, along with a small armed force, were the Island's only defence when Japanese invaded in 1942. The Island was captured and occupied by the Japanese until the end of WW2.Smoking GunThe long exposure and deliberate softening of focus in this photo makes the trees look like they are filled with smoke instead of leaves.Rock at Low TideThis rock in Flying Fish Cove is iconic. It now features a tree, but for most of the 1900's, was baron.Floating RockThe long exposure on this photo makes the rock look like it's floating in the ocean - very surreal.Canvas Art
