Photography Lighting Techniques
My favorite time to take pictures out doors is during a cloudy day. I get great diffused lighting with the sun shining through the clouds. My favorite kind of lighting when shooting in the studio is creating the kind of lighting that I like to shoot outdoors.
In the studio I diffuse the light by shooting through a soft white umbrella; it will soften the detail in a face when shooting portraits. For shooting products, I like to use a studio light tent, this gives me diffused light all around the product and eliminates shadows. You can find some real bargains on a lighting tent on eBay!
If you have a big product to shoot or you must shoot on a bright sunny day, buy some heavy duty white sheets. Figure out a way to build a light tent around your subject and then let the sun shine through the sheets. When photographing the cover of the "Hang 'Em High catalog, the shoot was scheduled outdoors on a very bright sunny day. The lighting was harsh and caused many shadows. I immediately sent my assistant out to buy some white sheets.
Expensive strobes and professional lights are not needed to produce professional photographs. Don't get me wrong, it is nice to have all the fancy equipment, but you absolutely don't need it. I have used construction lighting for years. The yellow tripods with bright 500 watt lamps work very well for photography. Also, halogen bulbs are daylight balanced and perfect for simulating daylight. These bulbs get very hot so you must be very careful. And be sure to take the metal grill off the front of the lamp housing.

Promotional Tips For a Wedding Photography Studio
One of the most essential elements of a wedding is the photography. This element preserves the memory of the couple's special day forever. Wedding photos record every detail of that day beginning with pre-wedding preparation, ceremony, reception, and the couple's send-off. Wedding photography also involves a wide range of photographic skills and equipment. Skills involved include a keen sense of timing as photographers must watch out for the ideal lighting condition, a heartfelt moment, an unforgettable expression, and the perfect shot of the bride and groom.
Wedding studio promotion can encounter several challenges due to competition with numerous other photographers. Studios need to learn how to stand out from the rest using effective marketing materials and strategies. Since the product or service sold is photographs, printed marketing materials are essential in conveying the concept and philosophy behind the studio's style.
The following are examples of printed promotional materials for wedding photography studios.
Booklets - Booklets are practical and handy marketing materials for a wedding photography studio. These materials can feature a collection of photos and captions illustrating the studio's concept. For studios with several wedding photographers, booklets can feature sections of the photographers' work including profiles, a list of services, equipment used, and field of expertise. Bulk orders of booklets can easily be printed through online commercial printing companies.
Catalogs - Catalogs can be used as helpful, in-house informational and promotional materials for a wedding studio. Studio owners can print them with larger photo prints accompanied by descriptions of suggested themes and details such as type of wedding, equipment used, venue, and date of wedding. A catalog can also be used to show several profiles of photographers in a wedding studio. Customized catalogs can be printed through the services of online printing companies.
Posters - Poster printing can serve as large-format, in-house promotional materials for a wedding studio. They can feature the studio's best wedding photos combined with powerful taglines. They can also be used to promote the studio at wedding fairs, trade shows, and exhibits. Online poster printing companies offer customized poster printing using digital or offset printers.

Choosing Lenses For Wedding Photography
Wedding photography has gained popularity over the years due to the increased pressure on bride and grooms to host the perfect wedding. Wedding photography depends on perfect timing and having equipment that matches the needs of the couple.
However, once you have gained enough experience in the field, you should start thinking about getting the best and latest equipment for wedding photography. If you start to carry out research and speak to different wedding photographers, you will realize that different individual prefer different brands and consequently, different lenses- depending on their style and mode of working.
It goes without saying that if you want to excel in the field of wedding photography, it is essential that you purchase a good portrait lens. Portrait photography depends on the distance between the camera and the subject as well as the lens' focal length. It is of common knowledge that if you take a close up of the subject with the help of a lens with a wide angle, the subject will practically protrude out of the photograph and its surroundings will look miniature. Therefore, if you want to achieve this kind of an effect, it is recommended that you use a wide angle lens and shoot from a short distance. This concept is called foreshortening and is very popular among wedding photographers.
However, in case the bride or the groom do not like close up and therefore, do not wish to see minute details of their faces- you cannot use these lenses. Therefore, it becomes necessary to involve the couple into your plans so that both the parties are happy in the end. You should explain how positioning the camera in a certain manner will add different angles to the photograph and make it look completely different.
A study was carried out recently which compared photographs taken from different focal lengths. The verdict was that portraits with wide angle lenses added a softer character to the photographs whereas photographs that were taken from a distance gave the subject a harder look.
While selecting the lens for wedding photography, you must first figure out whether you are on a budget or if you are willing to splurge on the best, that is, more than $1000 on a Canon lens. Even though these lenses are extremely popular, if you are on a budget, other lenses are made by Canon which are not as expensive. While choosing a lens for wedding photography, it is also important to figure out whether you will be using more than a single camera on the main day. Instead of wasting time changing lenses, a majority of wedding photographers carry two cameras.
A number of wedding photographers also rely on fixed lens solutions. These have gained popularity over the years because the quality of the photographs is enhanced and there is no need for the photographer to add color to them with the help of editing systems like Photoshop. However, fixed lens solutions lead to other limitations and therefore, hamper the photographer's personal style. For those interested in these lenses, the 24mm F1.4 L, 85mm F1.2 L, and the 135 mm F2.0 L and the 50mm F1.2 L are recommended. However, one can also combine these for best results. Fixed lens solutions are generally popular amongst wedding photographers who have gained enough experience to develop a unique style.

The Secrets of Posing
Any real photographer knows that the true secret to photographing the human form is getting the pose right. The pose makes or breaks thephotography. If this is an area that you are interested in, then this resource is definitely worth a read. There are many books like this one on the market, however i feel this book really excells in helping the photographer "visualise" the pose. This helps you form an accurate picture in your head, which allows you to "see the picture" before its even been configurated. This sounds basic, but this books tools help take your ability to the next level, so it therefore comes highly reccomended by many of our sites users.

Photography as a business
I was slightly loath to reccomend this link for a number of reasons. The first reason is that I havent personally read this guide, and the second reason is due to the fact that I felt that a lot of what this guide had to offer would be intuitive to most.
However, a number of people have emailed me to say they liked what it had to offer. As this section of the website is powered by the sites users, I therefore decided to put it up. This isn't however a guide i would personally rush out to buy.
I would suggest that the $200 per day claim is probably pushing things a bit. However, I know the method that these people are prescribing, and their definitely is money in it. The premise is simple and yet the money is really quite good. So if youwant an overview of how to go about making some money with your digital camera, then you will most likely find this guide to be useful.

Shooting sports
In many ways, sports photography is a growing photography sector. It has never been one of the "traditional biggies" for photographers, and has never captivated the photographer in the way that say, landscape and portrait photography has. I however have always been captivated by it. In fact, i strongly believe that sports photography is both the most challanging and the most rewarding area of photography to work in. The popularity of sports is ever growing, and as such is the market for sports photographers - making this a usefull tool in your armoury.
The fast movement on the sports field makes this a difficult area to photograph. However, many of you, like me, love your sports and want to take the best possible pictures. I have always loved cricket and formula one, which are 2 vastly different sports. Photographing each has its own challanges, and for years I was, frankly, hopeless at it.
This guide made all the difference for me, and really taught me some great tricks, so i therefore highly reccomend you take a look. This book really goes through the business side of things, which can be espoecially useful for photographers who are more skilled in the actual photograph taking side of things. The great thing with sports photography, wehich really sets it apart, is the fact that people will buy your photos simply because their photos probably havent come out very well! So if people want a great picture of the big sporting event, then they will probably need a professional to have taken it for them....
