Site

Our project is located in Shicheng1 Miyun2 Beijing, to the east of Miyun reservation. The area of forest land is 101.05km2, which covers 54.8% of Miyun. The establishment of Miyun County could date from 221 BC, when Qin firstly united China, and erected the Qin dynasty3. Initially, Miyun is called Yuyang4, one of 36 counties in Qin dynasty. In Chinese, it means north of the fishery, and the fishery refers to a reservation now called Miyun Reservation. Thanks to the reservation, Miyun enjoys a moist climate. As is mentioned above, the fraction of forest coverage is relatively high in Beijing because of such moist climate. Moreover, the forest stopped the sand blown from Inner Mongolian Plateau, and, thus, relieved the effects of sandstorms on Beijing5. 1: In Chinese, Shicheng means stone city. It shares a same name with a US city. 2: In Chinese, Miyun means thick clouds. 3: It is a significant event in Chinese history because this is the first time China was united. 4: “Yu” means fishing, or fishery, while “Yang” means to the north of lake. “Yang”, written in Chinese character as , originally means the sun or the sunlight. When talking about location, it refers to the north side of a lake or river, or the south side of a mountain because the sunlight there is always sufficient. Maybe that is why Miyun has the highest level of solar radiation. 5: As we all know, the weather condition has greatly improved in Beijing since the Olympic Games. However, sandstorm still troubles Beijing a couple of times every year and is considered to be one of the major climate disasters in Beijing.
Analysis

Analysis

Miyun, with annual average solar radiation of about 135k CA/cm2, is also the richest in solar energy in Beijing. Taking the solar panel of dow in 2009 as an example, the efficiency of the solar cell could be as high as 15% according to the weather condition in Beijing. What does it mean? Say that there are solar panels of 10m2 on a roof, and it could generate 2354.54 kWh per year6. All of our six students used less than 1200 kWh a year!

Periderm Structure

We have tried several different periderm structures during the conceptual phase. As we all know, periderm structure brings about beautiful facade as well as comparatively high expenditure of construction. Moreover, the periderm structure has to be combined with load-carrying members. Balancing these factors, we designed a primary periderm and of course we will keep refining this structure during the following phases.
