Lessons with Michael
So you think you would like to take piano or music lessons? Great! On top of just being cool (in my opinion anyway), learning music is an exercise that teaches discipline, instills confidence, and develops necessary personal and emotional skills.
What do you want? I have professional experience performing, writing, arranging, recording, band leading, worship leading, and conducting. I have a degree in Jazz Performance with Piano emphasis from Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude. While I would never claim to be an expert in classical music, well over 50% of my musical studies to obtain a jazz degree were in classical music.
What You Can Expect
That you won't be bored. I have a reputation of being kind of high energy. So to the best of my abilities we'll make learning music enjoyable.
It wont just be about the piano. Whether your goals are to play Mozart, Miles Davis, or Michael W. Smith, the technical aspect of playing the piano is only a portion of the skills you need to really enjoy music. Some of the other things we will work on are developing your ear and sense of rhythm, and even...singing!
I do not subscribe to any particular strict teaching/learning method. This may or may not be for you. We'll spend time evaluating where your strengths and weaknesses are in music and work to make you a well balanced musician.

Lessons are paid for in advance. For any lesson that I miss for any reason funds will be immediately refunded, or a free lesson may be scheduled. Scheduled lessons that students give reasonable time and reason for cancel will receive a 50% refund. If you show me up, you dont get your money back. :) Lessons can be rescheduled with no penalty if done so 7 days in advance. Just remember, rescheduling a lesson means trying to squeeze something into an already busy schedule. There is no rescheduling of lessons within 7 days, in that case the cancelled lesson policy will apply. Supplies and books are not included, so be sure to consider those costs when making a commitment for lessons ($10-$30 depending on your skill level). Lessons are scheduled 4 weeks in adcance at the most.

Michael, why the Nazi reschedule/refund/pre-paid lesson policy? Well, my commitments to my employer, New Hope Church, are full time, and Im married with 3 kids, and I also have 2 other part time jobs. So, its because Im a busy guy!! But I really enjoy teaching music, and look forward to doing so with you.
About Me
Currently, I'm serving the people of New Hopechurch in Haslett, MI as their Worship Director. It's a great place. Almost all of my professional work as a musician has been for the church, and I wouldn't change that for anything. I have learned how to make great music with all sorts of people, from the professional session player to the college professor to the beginner. And I love it.
I'd like to think that these musical experiences have taught me what it takes to make the best music possible with the gifts that are around me, and how to draw out the best in just about anybody.
Here's how I got started in music.
I like writing songs, and I think a got a few ringers that should do well when I get the chance to record them properly.
Other than music, I like racing in triathlons and waterskiing. I lead a fitness class at my local YMCA and l love Mexican food. I think I'll go get myself a burrito right now...
