Traveling to Cozumel
Entering by air only
At the Mexican Customs Booth.
Once you pass though Immigration you will need to collect your bags and proceed to the exit. You will hand the Customs Form (the one you filled out on the plane) to the customs agent and press the button on what looks like a traffic light.
A green light means “go” and a red light means “inspection”. If you get a green light, your are free to pass. If you get a red light, an official will perform a quick inspection. You may be asked to open your bags. Do not get frustrated. Usually the officers are very nice.
Check with the Mexican Embassy or local consulate before you travel if you have special equipment or if you travel with special needs as theere may be certain regulations and fees that you may be subject to.
At the Mexican Immigration Booth.
Once you arrive at the Cozumel airport, you will go through the Mexican Immigration booth where you need to present your passport and Tourist Card.
You need to be patient. Usually, if you arrive during the high season, the line and waiting time will be very long. It will be hot. Make sure you have properly filled out the tourist card and correctly signed on both sides. it is common to see people filling out the Tourist Cards as they stand in line. This is one of the reasons that the line gets held up.
Transportation from the Airport
FYI
If you purchase your hotel transportation from your travel agent, travel representatives will be waiting to assist you at the exit door otherwise, you will need to take a airport taxi, fees depend on the location of your hotel and range from $6.00 to $15.00 one way. (Prices are subject to change)
FYI : If you plan to rent a car at the airport, be aware of the traffic signs. 50% of the traffic accidents are due to the unfamiliarity with Mexican road signs. Make sure to ask the car rental dealer for a map and ask about the road signs. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO HIDDEN FEES in the price of the rental. Ask as many questions as you can. Remember that rental car regulations in Mexico can be totally different from the regulations of other countries.
Do not feel intimidated if you see armed soldiers guarding the airport. The Mexican government has put lots of effort into the battle against drugs and into national security. .
