The Slide Shows
The glass artist works with the reflection and refraction of colors and light. The art changes throughout the day. It is a powerful medium .

JOY
The girl reaching for the sky is in both the foreground and the background. She is a silhouette cut into the veil.
Previous
Exuberence
The lead lines complement the shape of the girl. This reinforces the sense of motion.
Passion
Streams of hot and cold light merge. Carried by the light, lovers embrace.
Contemplation
Overlapping planes of color help create the sense of crossed arms and legs.
Grand Sauté
The background and foreground merge. Neither dominate.
Our understanding of foreground, background and visual depth is a learned behavior. It is not innate. Starting at birth, we learn these concepts in order to survive. Our perception is not the reality. The images we see are a stream of light waves of different frequencies and intensities. Our learned visual clues enable us to perceive depth and location.
These panels reflect my attempt to intermingle and complement the foreground with the background. Some of the pieces may at first appear as interesting color compositions but as you study it further, a person should appear.

Winter
Winter received "Best of Show" and "People's Choice" awards. Textured clear glass creates the winter effect.
Fire Trees
This is an exploration of the world with an alternate color palette.
The Kemp'sTree
The panel went into a window with little direct light. Consequently, I needed to use intense colors.
10th Anniversary
This is an apple tree in the spring, a symbol of love. The fruit are three children
Rebirth
This is a combination of copper, brass and pewter. A torch was applied to the metal to create the "fire polish."
Repoussé is a coppersmithing technique used to shape sheet metal.
I stencil a design on a piece of light gauge sheet copper and snip out the copper form. The copper form is placed on soft matting. Using hammers and incising tools, I create a bas-relief of a tree branch.
An underlying bark like structure is created by incising ridges into the metal. The metal is tinned with 60/40 solder to give it additional strength and improve its solderability.
The form is then soldered to the foil on the panel. Using a quick setting solder, I create a knobby, rough tree texture.
In the last stage, I apply several different patinas to create the desired tree color.
WEBS
This piece is an exploration of an undulating foil line to create an organic feel. It is electroplated and has 2 way mirrors.
Autumn
This is Joy's design. The foil lines are my interpretation of a crazy quilt stitch.
Arizona Aloe
This is a family challenge. Each of us will be interpreting this aloe plant in different art media. Eventually we will have a photo, glass panel, quilt and metal sculpture.
Kathi's Rondelle
The wide foil lines define the composition. If I had emphasized different lines, another desgn would have appeared.
In traditional stained glass, the foil or lead line is an integral part of the art work. It delineates the glass shapes and is used to define the underlying composition. Many effects can be created
However its role is normally secondary to the glass. The lines are usually kept thin with a constant width. The line is relatively non-intrusive. Attention is focused on the glass.
In these panels, I experimented with different lead line widths. In some panels the line is still relatively non-intrusive and in others, notably Kathi's Rondelle, certain lines clearly define the composition.
Savannah Gate
There are two panels. The front is a textured clear glass with gate made from copper sheet metal.
Hidden Mountain
This wonderful overlay has three panels. The mountain appears during the day and recedes at night.
Double Quilt
This overlay works well from both sides. Each panel has a classic quilt design.
This is the other side.
Lamp
The light consists of an inner and outer shell and uses a dimmer switch. As the light brightens, the colors of the inner shell become more prominent
An overlay refers to the effect that is created when two or more panels of glass are placed one behind the other. The glass colors compliment each other and create a significantly more complex effect.
The distance between the panels, the level of glass translucence, the interplay of colors, the direction of light and the intensity of the light are all factors that effect the panel's look. The panel's look changes throughout the day.
These photographs show the the glass when the light source is primarily back lit.
