I was always fascinated with all aspects of film photography starting with 35mm but soon moving onto medium & large format . I soon found a passion for black and white and discovered the darkroom. Film processing and printing techniques together with studio lighting really helped me changed my
direction and not having studied photoraphy as I left home at 17 I always felt I needed to laearn so I bought and read lots of books on all aspects of photography.Within the first couple of years of professional freelancing practice and the help of a friend and colleague Tony Arnes I discovered the Ansel Adams zone system and the fundamantals
of film sensitometry. I spent the next few years honing my
darkroom skills (working as a printer for other photographers) using discovering different film types/developers/paper and
chemstry combinations. I did study the 'City and Guilds
Exhibition monochrome priniting' course in 1994 and after that I knew I wanted to study more but I continued to work and my philosophy was 'never turn a job down' which meant I had to think on my feet and learn quickly but it made me become a more versatile practitioner.
My interest moved on to fashion , hair and beauty and
another great friend of mine Justin Bavosi opened my eyes
to the things you could acheive with colour transparency film on location with the right light , great energy and reflectors. I used to buy all the fashion magazines and study the pages to try and work everything out for what ever the next project was that came along..After seeing a photo of Peter Lindbergh in Vogue in the early 90's holding a Pentax 67 in his hand , I knew then I just had to have one and this helped me create images that were a cut above all those shooting 35mm.
