epi Recycling Solutions is a post-industrial, single stream recycler headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania. epi offers a variety of services including, but not limited to, sustainability management, commodity consolidation, material testing, certified destruction to clients across several industries. Due to an increase in business, epi Recycling Solutions moved to an 80,000 square-foot facility in May 2010, operates 24 hours per day, 5 to 7 days per week, and employs up to thirty (30) workers at any given time.

sustainability management

epi Recycling Solutions offers facility waste stream audits focused on manufacturing scrap, obsolete products, and rejected items. We will work up and/or down stream to develop closed loop solutions to typically non-recycled items.

Erema Pelletizing line Our pelletizing line is top-notch, state-of-the-art technology, fully integrated and capable of densifying and/or shredding numerous types of plastic. The primary focus is on packaging film with multiple layers and print. The Erema can also process injection molded items that are under a certain thickness and can produce up to 1,200 pounds per hour of high-end use, completely degassed plastic pellets. Shredder Our shredder has size reduction capabilities of items up to 48" wide converted to strips that can be further size reduced or supplied to the Erema Pelletizing line. The one hundred, twenty-five (125) horsepower hydraulic drive unit has the capability to shred large plastic products or purge, wooden pallets, paper products, and electronic housings. Granulators Our granulators have size reduction capabilities of items up to 24" wide and under .125" thick. Each granulator produces regrind between .25" and .375". The sixty (60) horsepower system is capable of processing all plastic materials including injection, blow, and extruded products. Disassembly/Recall The staff at epi Recycling Solutions is trained in unpacking, disassembly and sorting of numerous products, with a focus on salvage of components and recycling and/or destruction of items. Dissassembly/Recall decreases disposal costs, provides environmental options and allows for certified product destruction. OCC & Paper Baling epi Recycling Solutions provides baling services for loose cardboard and paper. Commodity Consolidation epi Recycling Solutions allows customers to mix-load a trailer with multiple unique items including plastic, OCC, metal, glass, paper, etc.; doing so decreases customers floor space requirements, increases frequency of pick-ups and allows greater program flexibility.

All food packaging, whether human or pet, must be destroyed before disposal. epi Recycling Solutions' clients have the option for complete or partial recycling of the non-conforming, obsolete, or out of date products and/or packaging. epi Recycling has provided certified destruction for items including, but not limited to, medical gowns, IV bags and irrigation bottles, human food packaging, pet food packaging, safety devices, and recall items.

Megan Corbin

In 1987, Kurt Duska received a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Gannon University. Over the course of the last 25 years, Duska has achieved great success in tooling, molding, assembly, and recycling. Kurt has functioned as President of Engineered Plastics LLC since 1989. In 2007, Duska established EPI Recycling Solutions. Within the first month of its inception, Engineered Plastics LLC reduced disposal costs by more than fifty-five (55) percent. In 2008, Duska received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for $500,000. In addition to the grant, Engineered Plastics fronted $200,000 to purchase state-of-the-art recycling equipment. Furthermore, Duska was awarded Environmental Company of the Year by the NWPA Small Business Development Center. In 2009, following a conversation on a flight regarding the possibility and opportunity to recycle IV bags, Duska implemented a medical recycling program at the Cleveland Clinic. Multiple plastic products were collected, transported, sorted, and processed at EPI Recycling Solutions which is located on West 12th Street in Erie. Duska and his staff analyzed the material and sustainability program, and proceeded to contact several medical plastic manufacturers to discuss product design and recyclability. In 2010, Kurt Duska, President of EPI Recycling Solutions, joined forces with seven (7) other companies, including Johnson & Johnson, DuPont TYVEK, Cardinal Health, Hospira, BD Medical, Kimberly-Clark, and Waste Management to form the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC). JR Nordstrom graduated from Allegheny College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science. Following graduation, JR served as an inorganic chemist at Free-Col Laboratories located in Meadville, Pennsylvania for two years. In 1996, he began an eleven year career with Lord Corporation. While employed by Lord, JR served as Quality Technician and Technical Service Support (7 years), Grandview Boulevard R&D Facility Environmental, Safety, and Health Manager (1 year), and the Cambridge Springs Facility Environmental, Safety, and Health Manager (3 years). In 2007, JR joined the Gannon University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) where he served as the Environmental Management Assistance Program Consultant (2 years). In December 2009, JR began working for epi Recycling Solutions and is currently serving as the General Manager where he oversees all daily operations.
Megan Corbin graduated Cum Laude from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. While completing her undergraduate degree, she served as a student assistant in the department of alumni relations and contributing writer for the student-run newspaper The Spectator and boroonline.com. She was a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Honors Society for Communication Majors, as well as the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Following graduation in May, Megan began graduate coursework towards a Master of Arts degree in Communication with a focus on integrated marketing and leadership communications, as well as a certificate in Crisis Management. In June 2011, Megan began as a sales and marketing representative at epi Recycling Solutions. In this role, Megan has made it a priority to seek out new sustainability account opportunities constantly within established region and establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with prospective and current accounts.

Pennsylvania State Behrend's Plastics Engineering Department Each year, we employ one plastics engineering student from Behrend to complete material testing and analysis. With the information we receive from the intern, we are provided with the opportunity to locate the best end user for various recycled materials. Gannon University Small Business Development Center We work closely with the SBDC regarding consulting, education, and research needs. The Erie Community Each year, we collect, transport, and recycle the blue shrink wrap that covers boats in the winter into plastic pellets that can be transformed into new products. Additionally, we anonymously donate to the community when the opportunity arises.
