My love affair with photography began when my son was born 24 years ago. However, the journey I embarked on to become a photographer only began in 2006. It has not been one of formal study but instead of long exercises in quiet observation.
In far away places, I have seized opportunities to improve on my technique and more importantly have endeavoured to remain mindful of protecting the dignity of the people I choose to photograph. In doing so, I hope I have acquired the humility to grow and develop into a photographer of worthiness.
I believe in tuning into the mood of the subject and the over-arching narrative of a photograph more than in replicating a technically flawless image. I hope that in doing so it may reveal an inter-connection between myself as the photographer and the subject. When such connections are made, whether with people or places - it is indeed a humbling gift made more precious in the sharing.
When the person I am with relaxes, and even begins to disregard my camera altogether - no longer feeling guarded about revealing themselves, it is an enriching experience. Sometimes this is shown through a willing smile or an unintentional frown while at other times it may be just from being naturally pensive. I often feel priviledged to have been trusted in weaving a tiny pattern of my own that will become a part of life's bigger tapestry.
Drawing a frame around such moments and capturing them is sometimes about art and sometimes about sheer luck and timing. But it is always about making a more permanent image of a precious instant that will never come again.
