disjunct is a collaboration between photographer Tammy Williams and sound engineer Vic Parsons.
In August of 2009 Tammy and Vic travelled together through Argentina for four weeks. During this time Tammy took photos and Vic recorded sound, often at the same time. The journey was, at times, an uncomfortable and isolating experience.
"We took photos and recorded sounds. It made us pay attention to, engage with, and disrupt our surroundings. In a lot of situations we felt impotent but found our tools were a way to interact without words."
It was through these parallel expressions and joint experiences that the idea for the exhibition grew.
The tone of the exhibition is said to have an almost apocalyptic feel. The two artists acknowledge this as an integral part of what they are trying to explore and reflect with the works.
"I think being in Argentina during the dry season and travelling hundreds of kilometres over harsh empty landscapes and constantly being looked at with distrust and wariness put the country and the people into a place that felt as though it had been through the apocolpyse already. It was desolate and disarming and sad."
With disjunct, the artists are trying to explore reactions to and interpretations of the photographs and how these change once the sound is added to them. It is a type of sensory extravagance. It is about space and intervals; two completely different mediums that leap into each other to recreate moments, impressions, and amplify them.
