Cinco de Mayo at Maple Avenue!
7th grade Spanish students culminated their unit of study on Cinco de Mayo with a two day celebration. Musicians, Don and Victoria Armstrong (pictured above) visiting from Arizona, sang traditional folksongs in Spanish from Mexico and the southwestern U.S. Students sang, danced and accompanied them with maracas. The next day, students brought in homemade Mexican foods including salsa, guacamole, cookies and other treats.
Although Cinco de Mayo commemorates a battle won by the Mexicans against the French (in a war eventually lost by the Mexicans) in the mid 1800's, this holiday is more significant to Mexican-Americans, who take this day to honor their Mexican roots and heritage.
What can your dollar do?
Polio (Poliomyelitis) is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The poliovirus invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age, but mainly affects children under five years of age. On May 21st, with the help of the Rotary (an organization of business and professional leaders), Maple Avenue Middle School will be wearing Purple Pinkies to raise awareness and represent one child that they are able to help. What is the purple pinkie exactly? When a student has donated one dollar (the approximate cost to immunize a child from polio), into the Purple Pinkie Bucket their pinkie is painted purple to represent one child that has been immunized from polio. With their help many children all over the world will be able to survive this life threatening virus.
Montreal & Quebec City Trip
May 13th -16th, 49 eighth grade French students traveled to Montréal and Québec City, Canada. Their chaperones, Mrs. Murray, Mr. Richter, Mr. Singer and Mr. and Mrs. Cole would like to recognize and congratulate them on their exemplary behavior. Each of these 49 students represented not only Maple Avenue Middle School, but his/her country by consistently demonstrating the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, honesty, and reliability. They also had a fantastic time experiencing French Canadian culture. Highlights of the trip included a visit to the Biodome (an ecozoological museum) and shopping in the underground mall in Montréal and a tour of the Château Frontenac (a hotel), a visit to a Huron Village, a walk across a suspended bridge over the Montmorency Falls and a dance boat cruise on the St. Lawrence river in Québec City. It was a pleasure to travel with such an outstanding group. Merci! ~Robin Murray

Happy Memorial Day!
Memorial Day honors American men and woman who died while serving in the military.
Monday, May 31 is a federal holiday. The holiday, formerly known as Decoration Day, dates back to the Civil War and is marked in large and small parades, services and other events around the United States.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers...
