The Manukau Canoe and Adventure Club has adopted the NZRCA Safety Code of Practice.
All members participating in a club event should be aware of, and adhere to, this Code of Practice.
http://rivers.org.nz/article/code-of-practice
THE MANUKAU CANOE CLUB HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE 1989 AND CATERS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF FITNESS AND SKILL LEVELS. INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THE CLUB.
1. The MCC club operates as a network of friends who stay in regular contact to meet and participate in kayaking trips and other outdoor adventure pursuits.
2. The more capable members tend to offer the benefit of their knowledge and experience to those less seasoned members. However the club does not provide professional structured instruction in kayaking or other outdoor pursuits. Beginners are always encouraged however, to attend our fortnightly kayak sessions from our club rooms and weeknight mountain bike rides to build confidence and learn basic skills to prepare them for club trips.
3. New members are invitied to join the club, through making contact via the club web site or through contact with an existing member.
4. All members are required pay an annual membership fee, sign a health and safety indemnity waiver, and agree to abide by the NZ Recreational Canoeing Association NZRCA Code of Practice.
5. Any member may organise a trip. In practice though less seasoned members typically attend trips organised by those with greater capability, as members attend trips at their own risk - not the clubs, or the trip organisers.
6. Members benefit by being covered by the clubs public liability insurance on all trips they attend (as an individual, or with other club members). Public liability insurance is essential for attaining access to some of the managed forest areas.
7. Members may benefit through storing their boats at the clubs storage facility – additional fees apply.
8. Member communications are generally handled electronically using the most appropriate method: website, email, telephone, or text message.
9. Members are emailed a regular newsletter that informs them of coming events and matters of interest.
10.A General Meeting is convened annually at which time the clubs officials: President and Treasurer get nominated and elected to serve the members.

2012 club trips and events

Bring yourself and or the family up for a fun relaxed day. I will bring a few kayaks up for people to have a turn in and my small portable BBQ for any one who wants to bring meat to cook on it. Bring any other games or activities you want to engage in. I will bring swing ball also. To get there head along Whangaparoa Road , following the signs to Shakespear regional park, you will go past Army Bay on your left and the entrance to the park will be on your right. . This is a great beach and surrounding area. We will have several beach days during the summer period so let me know if you want to know when the next one is on.
Wenderholm regional park/Puhoi river - Saturday January 28th Family beach day - We will be paddling down the puhoi river to the beach. This is a grade one river, so therefore suitable for everyone. If you are not keen for kayaking then join us on the beach for a picnic BBQ. Let me know if your are keen. Bring the family for a day of fun at the beach. I will take the BBQ also so bring some meat to put on it. We will meet at the beach at 9.30am to organise the kayaking down the river, but feel free to join us through out the day if you are not wanting to join us for a paddle down the river. Kayaks will be available at the beach for people to have a go. contact Geoff for further information at geoff4nz_hotmail.com
Tongarior river 5th-6th February - A release of 32 cubic metres will be happening. Some of us will be heading down to do access 10, which is a good grade three scenic paddle. For those capable, we will also do access 14 and 13. For beginner grade two paddlers we can do the lower section and/or there is also options to book in with one of the rafting companies and join us on access 10 or 14. this is also a good option for non-paddlers, otherwise, there is plenty of walks and mountain biking options, so bring your family, kayaks and mountain bikes for a weekend of fun and adventure. I am aware that this is Waitangi weekend with it falling on Monday, which means we can make this into a long weekend and not have to head back until Monday.
Club room overnight stay - Friday February 10th 2012. Come join us for a BBQ and a late night evening paddle. Stay the night and then join us for bacon and egs in the morning. Please bring your own food for BBQ and breakfast as well as sleeping gear. Ping pong, darts and climbing wall also available. Contact Cathy for further details.
Rotorua Mountain biking weekend - February 25/26th. Come join us for a weekend of mountain biking in the redwood forest, which is one of the best mountain biking sites in New Zealand, with a large number of tracks graded from one to six, which means all abilities and fitness levels will be catered for with no time to get bored as we venture through the numerous tracks that wind through the forest.
Hunua Ranges overnight hike - Friday March 2nd. Hike in Friday evening after work/school to the hut (about 1.5 hours) along an easy closed vehichle track. Stay the night at the hut and then hike out saturday morning along Ernie's track, which is about three hours through great native bush, coming out where we started alongside the dam. A great trip for everyone of all abilities and fitness levels. Contact Geoff for further details.
Colvill Challenge - Mountain biking race 11th/12th March 2012 . Race is on Saturday the 11th. A contingent of club members are heading down for this race and staying over till Sunday. This is usually a great weekend, although it is a competive race it is also a very social occasion. There are various courses to race including a 21km, 42km and 72km distance. This year they have also organised a 42km, 21km or a 10km run/walk for those who would prefer this to biking. For further information visit www.colvilleconnection.co.nz and or Gary from our club who is heading down.
Fall James kayaking, mountain biking and camping trip - Easter weekend 6th - 9th April 2012. Something for everyone, even non-paddlers & bikers. Bring your tent and camp at the pony club, which is 5 minutes from the river. A great family trip with natural hot pools on the river side and a standing wave that is is great for surfing on and going through on boogi boards and lolos as well as your kayaks. With it only 15 minutes from Taupo there is plenty to do for non-paddlers including walks, mountain biking and swimming both in the river and swimming pools. We can also do a paddle down a grade one river from the Taupo contol gates to Rieds Farm. This is a very scenic trip without the worry of whitewater rapids. It also goies under the bungy jumping and past a natural hot pool, which we can get out and have a soak/swim in. Also great opportunity to practice your kayaking skills. For those keen your can also float down on your lilo. Contact Geoff or Phil to express interest and find out more. PLEASE NOTE you must be on the permit or have your own to enter Fall James area so make sure you let me know if your coming, as there is a cost to this.
Tarawera river trip - April 28th/29th. This is a great beginners kayaking trip with three different sections ranging from grade two, to an easy and short grade three. We can stay at Awakiri Hot Springs, which is a campground 40 minutes (at the most) from Rotorua, with a range of cabins and tenting sites and a massive hot pool, which is always nice for soaking and relaxing in. There is lots for non-paddlers to do including some easy tramping to waterfalls, one of which comes out the side of the cliff, a must see, as it is very cool. This is a very scenic spot situated among native bush and if your up for it the walk to the lake is just awesome. If you are lucky you may even see wallabies running or hopping around. Yep that is right I am not imagining this. Last time we were there we even saw three baby ones playing on the side of the track and a deer , which swam from one side of the river to the other, right in front of our boats. This is always a relaxing trip with everyone who comes catered for. If interested contact Karen to express interest or to find out more.
Hakarimata day hike (near Huntly) April 14th. Details to be confirmed. Contact Rosemary for further information if interested.
Mid Christmas dinner Friday June 22nd - Come join us at the clubrooms for a fun nights. Pot luck dinner.
PLEASE NOTE - Club trips are always being organised and may not appear on this calendar of events. For current, up to date information please join the club as be asked to be put on the email list.
Club AGM -Thursday 24th November 2011 - This will be happening at the clubrooms, at Avenue Road East Otahuhu, (go to end of road until you reach the water). I will be getting there around 5.15pm where we will start with a paddle. I may have some beginners coming along and so will be paddling around the clubrooms, so if you can't make it for 5.30 still come along, there will also be some non-paddlers hanging around in the club rooms. I have been promoting this as a have a go night with no charge, so bring along anyone you think may be interested with everyone from children to older generation being catered for oh yes and females (sorry private joke, which a few of you will connect with, aye Nina). we have both single and double kayaks with people willing to take those less confident in a double. We even have sit ons. We will then have a BBQ where I will supply some deserts. For those of you not familiar with my desert making, I will do enough to cater for everyone and will have a bit of a spread including the traditional fudge cake, which use to come on club trips quite regularly and homemade cheesecake and a few other things. If people can bring their own meat, salad and drink that will be good. I have put my name forward as president, but if anyone has any other nominations please let me know. David has indicated that he would like to stand down as treasure, so if anyone is able to take this role on that would be great. Please don't stay away out of fear of being nominated though because if you don't want to do it you won't be made to. I want to make this a fun relaxed night so please come along and catch up as I haven't seen some of you for a while.
Club membership is now due for 2012, I will bring some membership forms and the receipt book to the AGM for those of you who prefer to pay cash, alternatively you can go to the club website at http://www.manukaucanoeclub.org.nz/ and click on 'about us' and you will find the membership forms and account number for internet banking.
The working bee is happening tomorrow (Saturday 12 Nov). I will be there about 10.00 with paint, so feel free to come along and help if you can. Wally really wants some help painting the roof. If you are not into getting up onto the roof there are other jobs to do like water blasting and painting the deck and general cleaning up inside and replacing the window that was broken. We have the window and just need to fit it.
A couple of us will be surfing at Orewa during the weekday evenings when the conditions are right, and also to provide instruction to anyone wanting it. This includes practising ferry gliding in the estuary which produces a small wave on the out going tide. Let me know if you are interested and I will text you when we are going next.
Wairoa play wave this sunday - Nina is going down to do the grade two section and spend some time having a play on the play wave. She is looking for company for the day so if you are free and want to join her contact her directly at
nina.reid_vodafone.net.nz
This weekend, Rosemary, Adrian and Dee are heading down to the snow. The will be staying in the Auckland Tramping facilities, they have made it a club trip so if you would like to join them make contact with Rosemary directly on Adrian's email at adriandavisnz_yahoo.com.au From what Rosemary has told me she would love you to join her, more the merrier she says.
26th July 2011 Just a quick email to remind people that Tarawera trip is happening this weekend. Don't panic if you want to come, there is still time to fit you in. There are currently eight people confirmed as coming. This includes one non paddler who is keen to do some tramping in the area. Anyone who would like to join her is most most welcome, please let me know. Heaps of tramping to do and stuff that is not that hard either. Most of us are going down Friday night and returning Sunday. Hot pools are situated where we are staying and are part of the accommodation costs and they are awesome after a day on the river or in the bush. If you are keen to come or even if you are only comenplating coming, don't delay contact me (Geoff) soon as on 0211022562.
The club also had a great trip to Mt Te Aroha on Saturday, with the rain not deterring the enthusiasm of the five trampers, one runner (see if you can guess who that was, no it wasn't me) and one hot pool soaker (all of us enjoyed the hot pools in the end). Trip participants included Rosemary, Adrian, Bryan, Mirta, Ryan, Cathy and myself. Great laughs were had by all along with great conversation. Thanks to Adrian and Cathy who took their vehicles and after analytical discussion it was decided (by some) that going through Peroa was more scenic, but going the other way (down that other road) was faster. If I get time, which I probably won't I will right a more detailed report. If you want to have input in the conversations, come join us on a trip or three sometime, maybe this weekend.
I would also like to thank the Auckland sailing club who has donated $260 towards the clubroom maintenance.
Go well
12th July
Mountain biking this sunday 17th July at Totara Park. I will probably head up there at about 9.00am. Please let me know if you plan to come so I can wait for you and/or let you know if plans change. I could do earlier or later if people want to join me but cant make 9.00am, just let me know. I will meet in the main car park on Wairere Road Manurewa. These tracks are achievable for all abilities so don't worry if you are not confident on a bike or feel a bit or very unfit, it would be great to just have you with us.
Mt Te Aroha hiking 23rd July 2011 Due to popular demand I am doing this trip again for those who could not make the last trip. It is a fun hike with rewards of splendid views at the top and awesome hot pools at the end. I just love the hot pools, especially in winter. Don't worry if your not fit, neither am I, we will go as fast or slow as the people who come along. On average this is a three hour hike to the top for those who consider themselves unfit and 1.5 to two hours for those who have reasonable fitness. I have taken people with varying degrees of fitness on this hike, with everyone getting to the top, so it is achievable for everybody. So don't use the "I am not fit" as an excuse for not coming. If you want to just join us in the hot pools you will be most welcome.
Tarawera trip - July 30 -31st 2011. I now have three people plus myself confirm, yep that is four people and we plan to have a great time. It would be nice to have some other members come along. It is good for beginners so don't be shy or afraid, we will look after you. We will stay in cabins at Awakeri Hot Springs, which has an awesome hot pool. Visit http://www.awakerisprings.co.nz/ for more information. I have booked one cabin, so if you want to share accommodation let me know, will be first in first served otherwise book your own accommodation and join us on the river. This is a great beginners trip with Grade two to three rapids spread over three different sections of the river. Lots to do for non paddlers with mountain biking, swimming (hot pools) and walks to some amazing waterfalls and other scenic places, which would fill up your day. Contact Geoff on 0211022562 or geoff4nz_hotmail.com for more information and to express interest. Please confirm with me as soon as if you plan to come on this trip, so I have an idea of numbers.
Feburary 2011
At the last meeting the following was passed by those who attended. Clubroom storage change in price– It was agreed that members will no longer pay for a key each year. Any past members who already had a key and have again paid this year will receive a refund, make contact with me regarding this.
Clubroom storage will remain at $30 and membership fees will remain as they are. If anyone has any comments regarding this please forward to me.
Cheers,

Whitewater is why the club was started in the first place, and is still a large part of the club. Members regularly leave Auckland in search of good whitewater. We travel to such rivers as:
Wairoa | Kaituna | Tarawera | Mohaka | Tongariro | Rangitaiki and when it rains,
Hunua and Karangahape Gorge!
And in the South Island:
Buller | Matakitaki | Matiri and Owen Rivers.
Manukau Canoe & Adventure Club have had many members competing in multisport events.
Events completed include:
We regularly plan sea kayak trips and training sessions from our clubrooms.
Trips of note include paddling to Rangitoto Island, Motutapu Island and Wenderholm. We also do a multiday Whanganui River trip each year.
The club owns a small fleet of sea kayaks including a double that can all be hired for the weekend, or used directly from the clubrooms. These are great kayaks for initial learning for multisport racing, and to build on fitness.
You can view details of our boats for hire here.
We often go out and catch some waves when we are not running rivers.
The west coast beaches are great and not too far away. If the surf is up we'll let you know and see you at Piha, Murawai or Port Waikato.
There are also a few play waves we get to, like Full James!
New Zealand has such an abundance of unspoilt native bush, coastlines and wildlife. What better way to see it than by tramping.
Our regular Auckland stomping grounds are the Hunua and Waitakere Ranges.
But we also go further afield for longer tramps like the Tongariro Crossing or the Pinnacles in the Coromandel - if you are up for a challenge!
With fantastic routes around in the Waitak's, Hunua's, Rotorua and Taupo as well as our local Woodhill and Riverhead - there is a lot of fun to be had.
If you have a bike come along and join us ... the more the merrier ... its a great way to see the country and a great way to get fit!
