If ever a trend has become a full-scale tidal wave, then the one for "Retro" design must be it. The term Retro, now applied to decades of art/design with genuine quality and style has arrived to stay. In the original it's revived and with contemporary styling it has given a tremendous boost to new imagery. This new work coming into the market place, heavily drawing on the same design ethos is accepted without a murmur of criticism.
As a result we are enjoying a variety of great products with retro design showing real talent and clear branding. This branding is so embedded in our society that it is hard to resist. The attraction and quality of good, intelligent original design is obvious.
Today, this imagery sends different messages to different age groups and gives products a far wider customer appeal. Any image, visually could be a childhood memory, an aspirational brand or a piece of kitsch. The appeal is universal and it's not bad for sales or marketing either.
There's also the inspirational route to this new design that arises from a keen interest in the surface design used on packaging.
