Biography

BIOGRAPHY

Upon returning, Allen began creating art work on a daily basis. He rented an apartment in New York City and went back and forth from West coast to East coast eventually establishing himself with several galleries, including the Goldstrom Gallery at 560 Broadway in Soho. He also showed in the front windows of the Rockefeller Center on two occasions.

His paintings are in many notable collections. He has been an invited lecturer and portfolio reviewer at Cal State Universities and at Art Center College of Design in Southern California. His alma mater, Texas State University, featured his work in the publication "The Article" in 1998. He has been involved with college internship programs and has employed students from colleges throughout the U.S. and London.

Allen began his training early with his artist father Harrison Allen . He received a BFA at Texas State University in San Marcos and later he continued studying at Parsons School of Design in New York City. He opened his first studio in an artist co-op where he had his first shows at the gallery Designer Space in Austin, Texas. Painting soon became an obsession for him.

In the late 80s, Mark moved to Los Angeles and studied further at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He started using typography in his paintings and exploring scale with billboard size canvases. He served as Vice President of development in the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Los Angeles Chapter. He traveled to Europe in the early 1990s to see the great art at world class museums such as the Tate in London, The Centre Pompidou and Louvre in Paris and the Van Gogh

Museum in Amsterdam.

Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT

I had an ah-ha moment early in my life. My dad bought a book for me that opened my mind to great art being created. I think it was titled Ten American Artists That Are Making a Difference. Something like that. The point was, here was my dad, an artist himself, giving me a book on artists other than his own artist friends, and very good artists at that. He inscribed inside the book: "study these artists who are making a difference in the art world, and not the local-yokals." (living in Houston) In that book was Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Willem deKooning, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Joseph Cornell, and a few more. I studied those guys. (I eventually met three of them) I was hooked. I wanted to create great work like them. Each one of them was pushing their own limits to reach a new place in art. That is what I am interested in as well. I am interested in being an artist of my own time, and making a difference. To matter.

I realized after graduating with my art degree from Texas State University, that I wanted more training. So I went to New York City to study at Parson's School of Design. Later I continued study at Art Center in Los Angeles. I balanced my painting with my graphic design work, one feeding into the other. My hand-lettering in my commercial design was working it's way into my paintings and my painterly style was working it's way into my graphics. This edgy style that I had created, led to a lot of my work shown with high profile galleries including in New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, New Zealand, and Tokyo. Twice I have been invited to show my artwork at the prestigious Rockefeller Center.

Each hand signed image was originally created using many layers of typography and imagery, then scanned and printed with high grade achival inks on canvas and hand stretched onto 1 1/4" deep pine stretcher bars. then coated with four layers of UV varnish, and the sides are then painted black. It is ready to hang on your wall.
