Mala Wright first caught the acting bug at the tender age of four.
“I began reading at the age of three and I would use the bed sheets from the wash as a stage curtain. They would be hanging over the stone patio in my yard and to me, is became my stage." Wright would claim to be in a play. She would sing and dance. Soon after that, Wright's mother, Minnie took her around to various local theatre companies. But, the eager four year old was too young to join. So, Wright had to wait until Kindergarten to make her official stage debut. After stepping out onto the stage decked out in warm, cozy pajamas, Wright belted out a Christmas tune. And upon hearing the roar of applause from the audience, the five year old was hooked.
She followed up high school at Mercer County Community College, where she earned an Associate's Degree in the Arts. After being awarded an academic scholarship, Wright transferred to Rider University. There she completed her studies with a Bachelor's Degree in Radio and Television Communications. She studied theatre and music in Berlin and London through Rider's Interim Studies Program. And, during that time, she was inducted into Alpha Psi Omega, the National Honor Society for the Dramatic Arts. She also performed in a few college main stage productions. Wright continued to compete in state pageants. This time she won first place talent and photogenic awards. Wright's winning titles include The Tri-State Hemisphere Pageant, which also won her another scholarship, Miss Jersey Hemisphere, and she won first place runner up in the talent portion of the US Show Biz Competition.
After college, Wright continued to flourish in her acting career. She has appeared as a guest panelist on Ask E. Jean with Elle Magazine Columnist, E Jean Carroll for America's Talking, the short-lived NBC cable network. Her acting credits include films such as Emmett's Mark, Brother To Brother, Bad Company, Rage and Discipline, Bottomfeeders and Beavergate . On television Wright's appearances included three episodes - season 1&2 of Hack, the short-lived ABC drama, Philly, she plays the cat lady in the opening credits on Into Character for AMC and Cold Case for CBS. Wright has also appeared to international audiences for the Japanese morning show, Mezamashi TV and the very popular soap Seulpeun Yeonga (Sad Serenade) for Korean Television. In September 2000, Wright had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Academy Award winning Actress Halle Berry for Cream Magazine, a local NJ African American publication. In 2005, Wright appeared on WPVI -TV's Independence Day Ceremony with Sir Elton John. She recited a portion of the Declaration of Independence.
Wright, who is a self-taught musician, had the honor to sing in the choir with R&B Legend Ray Charles for the NJ Lotto's 30th Anniversary Celebration. She has signed a contract with Metropolis Entertainment for a supporting cast role for the pilot of the TV series, Life After Skippy. Other films Wright has appeared in are Golden Empire, Disturbing Images, Prince Of Broadway, The City Is Mine and Saddle Up with Dick Wrangler and Injun Joe. She has also made an appearance on WE Television’s Cinematherapy along with Comedian Chuck Nice. Wright has performed as a storyteller for Historic Philadelphia's Once Upon A Nation in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 , 2010 and currently in 2011.
