She will be teaching a seven week class on "Old Baubles into New Hits" on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. beginning January 13th in the Bistro.
Each class is $5.00, it is suggested that each student bring their own jewelry tools consisting of two flat nose pliers and one rosary pliers, or two flat nose pliers, one flush cutter and one round nose pliers. Some sets will be availiable for borrowing.
The first class will be a "getting started meeting" with your "New Best Friends" (jump rings, eye pins and E6000glue). The second class will be getting into a project of your own, using your "New Best Friends." The thrid class will consist of stringing strands of beads and understanding what enables them to have a great look. The fourth class will involve adding your own art, either collage or metal works, and the fifth through seventh classes will be spend creating and displaying your own designs.
Following the class, there will be an exhibit of the students' work in the Bistro entitled "Novice Jewelers Turned Pros."
Because of limited seating, reservations are suggested. Instead of throwing away your old, broken jewelry, bring it to classes that will teach you how to not only repair but give your jewelry a new look.
A vision has become a reality at the new Carnegie Community Arts Center, known as the Grande Dame of Somerset, Kentucky! What was once the old Post Office and then the Public Library is now the home of some of the areas major arts organizations. The beautiful, historic three-story structure built in 1913 is named for philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, who provided the first public library in Somerset. The building has been renovated to accommodate exhibits, weddings/receptions, shops, studios, offices and a French-style market and café.
The Carnegie Community Arts Center is a non-profit arts organization, whose mission is to promote the arts through entertainment and education, while offering an affordable facility to rent for community events and private celebrations. The Carnegie receives no government funds and is operated solely by volunteers.
Donations, events and rental fees sustain the organization and allow for the Center to be opened to the public five days a week Tuesdays through Fridays, 11:00 am--5:00 pm. We are closed during inclement weather.
An open reception is held in the formal Federal Room located on the main floor on the fourth Friday of each month for featured artists who exhibit their work throughout the building. Both local and regional artists are invited to exhibit. There are new exhibits monthly. Music and refreshments are provided by the Carnegie. This event is held in combination with Open Gallery Night, where studios are open and art is displayed on all three floors. The community at large is invited to attend this free event each month.
Classes in music, art, dance, language and exercise are offered by different resident arts organizations and artists for adults and children, as well as lectures, book -
discussions, workshops and special events. An outreach program for the youth encourages and supports those between the ages of 12 and 24 to dislplay their work in the Youth Gallery, located on the lower level.
Students and adults who are interested in art are invited to bring their sketch pad or canvas and set up in The Bistro for an afternoon of inspiration and instruction. Carnegie's artists are always happy to give advice and answer questions. Several young artists have already been "adopted" by Carnegie's residents so that they may develope their skills and creativity.
The Federal
The Federal Room, located on the Main Floor is a large, elegant space that can be rented for dances, weddings, receptions, banquets and private parties. It comes equipped with a caterers prep kitchen and beverage area. An open reception is held in the Federal Room on the fourth Friday of each month for featured artists who exhibit their work throughout the building. Both local and regional artists are invited to exhibit. There are new exhibits monthly. Music and refreshments are provided by the Carnegie. This event is held in combination with Open Gallery Night, where studios are open and art is displayed on all three floors. The community at large is invited to attend this free event each month.
The Bistro
Located on the lower level of the Carnegie, is an eclectic, more informal space that is filled with artwork and surrounded by artists' studios. It can be rented for birthday parties, showers, bridge parties, meetings and luncheons. If requested, a resident artist can give a presentation or offer instruction during an event. Catered lunches are served in the Bistro Tuesday through Friday with 24 hr. advance reservations.
"Tunes at Noon" will be held in the Bistro each Thursday beginning at 12pm offering live musical entertainment. Wifi is available for those who want to bring their laptop, drink a cup of coffee and continue working while listening to the music.
The Yellow Umbrella
A French-style market/coffee shop located on the lower level has a variety of cappuccinos, coffees, teas, hot chocolate, snacks and gifts. All proceeds go to the artists and Carnegie Community Arts Center.
In 1994, a small group of artists decided it was time to form an active, friendly guild based in the community of Somerset, KY. They wanted to gather skilled artists, combine knowledge and create opportunities: a learning guild.
Because the beauty of our area is often a theme throughout our work, they call themselves SHELTOWEE ARTISANS after the 250 mile hiking trail, the Sheltowee Trace, meandering through our region.
Their logo is the turtle because the name "Sheltowee" was given to Daniel Boone by our Native Americans many years ago and means "big turtle."
From that small group of artists with a yearning for interaction, SHELTOWEE ARTISANS has grown into a 75+ member force.
Master Musicians Festival
A non-profit organization committed to the presentation and preservation of a multitude of musical genres each year in a great July Festival Weekend. They bring a wide variety of multi-cultural and multi-generational music to their stages in a family-oriented event.
Beyond The Image Framing
