Madeleine Bernatchez
Performance Designer / Artistic Director
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Madeleine Bernatchez, a professional performance designer, is also the principal writer, director and choreographer for Sintroca (a performance company based in NYC and Los Angeles).
Her training in both the visual and the performing arts, has nurtured her interest and dedication to imagistic performance. Her productions are notable for a pronounced visual flair and love of the carnivalesque.
She has worked on a number of performances around the world, including The REDCAT Theatre in Los Angeles, The New York Theatre Workshop, PS122 and The Ontological Theatre in NYC, the Theatre des Treizes-Vents in Montpelier, Theatre National de la Colline in Paris, Friction Festival in Dijon, The Edinburgh Festival…
Under her artistic direction, Sintroca has produced four productions, all of which have toured internationally.
The productions play with visual storytelling, often surrounding the ideas of aura, sensuality, duplicity, love, artifice and mystery.
There most recent production, Lasanta, used a collage of hard boiled crime writing, Mexican song lyrics and the live musical accompaniment of Lady Lucille, to explore the fantasy and fallout of kaleidoscaped love.
Sintroca mixes the bawdy language of a vaudeville talent show with contemporary multi-media creating a devilish theatrical cocktail.
“We do not pretend to be a new media enterprise,” says creator Madeleine Bernatchez, “but rather a company that is interested in the hybrid blending of digital technology with a vintage sense of naked performance. Are productions use 'media' to transform the most obvious theatrical conventions of pageantry, puppetry, tableaux vivant, song, dance and burlesque as a way to the audience's heart and mind."
Madeleine is also a member of TENT, a theatre collective based in Brooklyn, NY.
She holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.
