What a Gal!:

Wooden box decorated with acrylic paint and images cut from 1984 Montgomery Ward and Sears catalogs. Flowers on front of box are hand painted to match the pattern on this gal's dress.

Interior wouldn't be complete without plastic, pink-glitter, Mother Mary and fake flower.

Entire box coated with protective, glossy finish.

Dark wood box from India with hand painted blue details on exterior.

Interior is painted with acrylic paint and features metal manger animals from a vintage Christmas ornament. Plastic glow-in-the-dark baby Jesus is complete with hand-painted gold details. Jesus is mounted on a page from 1974 Little Golden Book entitled "Prayers for Children."

Vintage wooden box with hand-painted details.

Left side of interior features an image from an antique 1951 Sleeping Beauty story book, and the cut out excerpt, "loveliest sight in the world - a sleeping princess, a statue in rose".

The right side is decorated with a sexy image from a 1974 photography magazine, and cut story book excerpt, "Just at that moment the enchantment came to an end."

Mary Shrine:

Mexican / Caribbean style Mother Mary shrine created in a high-quality wooden box with blue stained glass back wall. Exterior is hand-painted with acrylic and coated with high-gloss protective finish

Vintage, ceramic Mother Mary statuette is detailed with glitter and surrounded with faux flowers. Interior walls are painted metallic gold and decorated with large sequins and Mardi Gras beads.

Ganesh Series:

Ganesh appeared to me in meditation dressed in elaborate Mother Mary garb. I thought it was interesting and beautiful, so I decided to do a series of images to try to convey what I saw. Although he looked most like #1 in the series, it was so much fun to paint that I decided to create several.

Day of the Dead Gypsy:

Ceramic bust was found at a thrift store. I hand-painted her with acrylic and glitter to transform her into a Day of the Dead style Gypsy woman.

She is mounted on a solid wood plaque which is also hand-painted with acrylic, and decorated with Mardi Gras beads.

About Mackenna Morse

I love to go "treasure hunting" at junk stores, thrift stores, garage sales - everywhere! Finding little pieces of history and using them to create new pieces of artwork gives new life to disregarded pieces. Plus, it's really fun.I am only moderately trained in fine arts. I dropped out of Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I just have a lot of fun making little crafts and folk art types of items.I get really excited about gaudy religious art, and fell in love with Mexican folk art (Day of the Dead, Catholic Shrines) when I visited Mexico for the first time in the spring of 2011.I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my husband, our dog, and our two cats.
