Northmen Open District Playoffs by Slamming TC West 43-22
By Marty Scott, February 29, 2012. The game was close all through the first half but after the break, Petoskey shut out Big North Conference champion West from the floor and allowed them only three free throws. Kelsey Ance lead all scorers with 16 and added 10 rebounds. Katelyn Crittenden tossed in 11 and was a defensive standout holding West's Freshman phenom Katie Placec to 6. Team all-time blocked shot leader, Meagan Tompkins scored 6 and racked up 3 more blocks and 4 rebounds. Alyssa VanWerden, with bench help from Liz Fraser, kept West's other offensive star Shaina Streeter in check, allowing her only 6 points.
Petoskey next faces Gaylord on Thursday night at home. (The game was originally set for Wednesday but was postponed by weather.) Nelson, Jason and I will bring you that game live on WJML AM1110 with the pregame starting at 6:30. The winner will go on the road Saturday for the District championship game against the winner of Wednesday night's match up between TC Central and defending District champion Marquette.

Northmen Defeat Alpena 47-29 for 2nd Straight Win
By Marty Scott, January 20, 2012 . The Petoskey Northmen varsity girls' victory over Alpena was a microcosim of their season. They got off to a slow start in the first half but roared out of the locker room to outscore the Alpena Wildcats 38-18 in the second half.
As the Northmen now enter the second half of the season, they seem to be finding their strength individually and as a team. Next week provides a great opportunity to test their new-found prowess against the two teams sitting just ahead of them in the Big North standings -- at Gaylord on Tuesday and at home against Cadillac on Friday.
Come out and watch your team at both of these crucial games. If you can't be there join us on WJML AM1110 and wjml.com at 7:00 Tuesday and Friday for the pregame with live basketball action starting at 7:30.
