Live and Unsigned 2012

Live and Unsigned auditions are for the first time heading for Derby.With the chance to play at The O2 in London and with £100,000 in prizes, Live and Unsigned is set to attract thousands of unsigned musicians when auditions begin in January. In acknowledgement that last years winners The Trinity Band originated from Derby, the judging panel is making its first visit toThe Riverside Centre on February 11th. The competition has just announced an additional new main cash prize of £10,000 for the winning act to spend on their development. Add to that the prospect of festival slots across the UK and the world and its clear to see that Live and Unsigned is THE competition for aspiring bands and acts to enter in the New Year. There are festival slots in Canada, Italy, Latvia and Dublin up for grabs for the best unsigned acts in the country that make it to the Grand Final at The O2, which is incorporated into Live Fest, London's biggest indoor festival.Live and Unsigned is the UK's biggest unsigned music competition for original artists and its open to all genres. Other prizes up for grabs include a UK tour, a selection of Blackstar and TC Electronic amps, extensive coverage on MUZU TV and YouTube and a comprehensive consultation package with Future Music including social marketing, image, brand, access to industry contacts plus more!All acts in the competition are auditioned live which is what makes Live and Unsigned so unique, there are no demos or submissions. Acts that make it through the audition stage will get to perform to industry judges, A&R associates and celebrity guests in some of the UK's most prestigious venues. Those who make it to the Grand Final will get to share the stage with some of the UK's best musicians at Live Fest at The O2 in London! Acts on the bill last year included Tinchy Styder, Zane Lowe, Roll Deep and The Hoosiers.Judges set to join the panel in 2012 include Radio 1 DJs Annie Nightingale, Tom Deacon and Daniel P Carter, Kerrang's Alex Baker and Happy Monday's star Bez.Last years winners The Trinity Band from Derby have been living the dream since being crowned the best unsigned band in the UK in July. They've gigged in Canada and played at some of the UK's biggest festivals supporting the likes of Chase and Status, Example and Chipmunk. They're now working on a single in the studio with DaVinChe who's produced for some of the biggest names in the industry. Acts are urged to enter now as places are in high demand and auditions are limited. Mold Colony

You know, there aren't many bands/artists that can get away with the phrase - I'd get more understanding from a cosmic babboon!but somehow Mold Colony manage it - and I have a feeling more craziness is yet to come. I am literally writing this as I hear the tracks for the first time, something I am not wont to do on a regular basis as it can be unfair; some artists are growers - you have to listen to them a few times to 'get them'. Mold Colony, on the other hand, are different. If I don't write as I go I wouldn't trust my memory, I wouldn't believe what I'd just heard!Space Monkey is reminisicent of the Bare Naked Ladies, you know, when they were good. It is a very succinctly put rebellion against modern corporate life - one I think many listeners can relate to.There isn't much I can say, dear reader, you will think I am making it all up. Mold Colony will blow your mind! If you like the Big Bang Theory then I think you will like these - especially Crunch!If Mold come to the UK, I will be there in the front row! These are a band for those who refuse to grow up.

You may well recognise this duo from their viral sensation - the addictively sampled MGMT Opposite of Adults.After 16+ million views, the duo are back with their latest offering - Ray Charles.Released on the 26th February through Parlophone, this will be Chiddy's first single from the album.Chiddy have kept their impish outlook with a playful, impish track that has a beautiful retro feel; I could easily imagine this making an appearence in the musical, Hairspray. No, seriously!Chiddy have a unique sound that extends from fifties soul/motown to Philly hip hop. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a huge fan of hip hop or rap, but even I can't help but tap my foot to this. Does it sound like anything I know? Not really, but then I don't think this will sound like ANYTHING anyone has heard. Have a listen--------------->

Originally, Kevin submitted the track, Little One for review. I couldn't resist checking out the entire album though, I am nosy like that - it's some sort of compulsion or disorder or something. What I found pleasantly surprised me, and puzzled me.My introduction to Kevin set me up for "Acoustic Rock artist in the style of Sting, Steve Perry and Bruce Dickinson." Now, Sting is an acquired taste, Steve Perry gets overplayed and Bruce was a nice old school touch that I was looking forward to hearing and whereas I hear what people are getting at with the actual quality of Kevin's voice, there isn't enough anger behind the delivery for Bruce.However, if I were to describe Kevin in three artists, based on this album, I would say - REM, but better, a touch of Black Lab and more than a dash of James of Laid fame in the 90s. This is a great combination. I have already listened to the album 3 times. It is at once relaxing and refreshing. Kevin is clearly an accomplished songwriter and has a knack of writing very listenable tracks that sound fresh every time you hear them. I was immediately taken back to my teens watching Buffy and imagining I was sat in the Bronze (yes I was and still am very much a geek).This album has a touch of drama and all the makings of a great soundtrack - it feels as though a story is being told and it's a story I would like to see.
