ABOUT US
History and mission
The Luso Brazilian Association is a student organization. Its home is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The association was begun in 2004 thanks to the initiative of former faculty member and coordinator of the Portuguese courses, Prof. Ana Thomé-Williams. The main goal of the Luso Brazilian Association is to promote cultural and academic activities related to the Brazilian and Portuguese speaking communities around the world. In addition, the association aims to connect different departments/programs at the University of Illinois interested in Brazil, Portugal or other Portuguese speaking countries. Finally, the Association intends to integrate Portuguese learners and the Brazilian community to the Champaign-Urbana region. The Luso Brazilian Association has developed, established, and promoted activities that enhance the participation and cultural exchange of students on the University of Illinois campus and the Luso-Brazilian community. Conversation group (bate-papo)
The main goals of the Portuguese conversation group are to help learners 1) practice spoken Portuguese in an informal setting, 2) build confidence in expressing themselves in Portuguese, and 3) become able to communicate their thoughts more fluently without worrying too much about strict grammatical rules. Bate-papos can help make you more knowledgeable and more comfortable talking about topics that are important to you both academically and in other everyday activities.
Who can participate?
The Portuguese conversation group is open to all: university students, scholars, staff and community, native or non native speakers, but mainly to those learning Portuguese. The conversation group has proved to be a great way to improve fluency, expand vocabulary, and make friends.
The group meets every other week on campus and participants talks about different topics each week. Participants use vocabulary from different areas, share perspectives, experience and background knowledge related to the topic discussed, while also learning more about each other.
We have 15-20 people on average participating in our Bate-Papos, which usually take place on campus. For dates, please check our Calendar.
ACTIVITIES
Additionally, with the purpose of promoting and sharing Brazilian culture,the Luso Brazilian Association supports two big events in Champaign Urbana: the Carnival Party and the
Brazilian Independence Day Party .
The Carnival Party takes place in the spring semester and the Brazilian Independence Day Party, in the beginning of the Fall Semester. They are the biggest annual Brazilian party promoted by the association. The event receives three hundred people on average per semester. The parties have had great repercussions and also attracted people from neighbor cities. The goal behind hosting a Carnival party is also to raise funds to support the Association and its activities during the academic year.
