This is what you need to know.
What is a Free-style?
A free-style is a dance performed by a student/teacher couple or a student couple. Each free-style is 90 seconds in length. There may be one to four couples dancing on the floor at a time. Age Groups and levels are not seperated, this is not a competition against each other, but a way to receive comments from an outside source. During each free-style, the judge writes comments for each student, and gives each student a score. The dances will be done in order starting with American Smooth, International standard, American Rhythm & International Latin. Louis & Company requires that a student dance a minimum of 20 free-styles in order to get the most value from the judges comments. Remember, this event only comes around once a year so make the most of it!
What is a Scholarship Dance?
The Scholarship round is mandatory if you are planning on entering the Heart of America Competition is August. There are four scholarship catagories that you can enter; American Smooth, International Standard, American Rhythm and International Latin. You may compete in one round or as many as four. In each dance catagory dancers do three of the dances in that catagory back to back
American Smooth: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot
American Rhythm: Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing
International Standard: Waltz, Tango, Quickstep
International Latin: Cha Cha, Samba, Jive
Dancers will compete against other dancers in their appropriate age catagory and level. They will recieve scores and the top scores will be placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Each of the three places will recieve a scholarship cash prize.
What is a Showcase Routine?
A showcase routine is a choreographed number done by a student/teacher couple or a student couple, however, they are not limited to one couple. Showcase routines are performed one at a time in from of the judge and other audience members. Most showcase routines are two to three minutes in length, and include advanced material such as lifts, dips, and other tricksa not permitted on a social floor. The judge will score each routine, however, the purpose is primarily for entertainment value.

If you are entertaining the idea of competition, Louis & Company's Dance Festival is the perfect place to start. We provide a fun and relaxing way to get your feet wet. Our festival is run similarly to how the big competitionsa are run, but on a much smaller sale. But remember, in order to get the most out of the event, you must dance a LOT. The more you dance the better prepared you will be for a large competition.
